They are among the most sought after services for candidates who have a keen interest in Economics and Statistics. Being an officer in the Indian Economic Service /Indian Statistical Service gives an opportunity to undertake economic analysis, render advice for designing and formulating development policies, strengthening delivery systems, monitoring and evaluating public programmes, etc.

Educational Qualification:
(a) A candidate for the Indian Economic Service must have obtained a postgraduate degree in Economics/ Applied Economics/ Business Economics/ Econometrics.
(b) A candidate for the Indian Statistical Service must have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics as one of the subjects or a Master’s degree in Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics.
Age limit:
Candidates appearing for the examination should have attained at least 21 years of age. The maximum age limit for General, OBC and SC/ST category candidates is 30, 33 and 35 years respectively.
Plan of Examination:
The Indian Economic Service / Indian Statistical Service examination consists of two stages:
PART I – Conventional (written) Papers
PART II – Interview
Part I: Candidates are required to appear for the following papers in the written exam.
For Indian Economic Service:
(a) General English – 100 Marks, 3 Hours
(b) General Studies – 100 Marks, 3 Hours
(c) General Economics I – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(d) General Economics II – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(e) General Economics III – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(f) General Economics – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
For Indian Statistical Service:
(a) General English – 100 Marks, 3 Hours
(b) General Studies – 100 Marks, 3 Hours
(c) Statistics I – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(d) Statistics II – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(e) Statistics III – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
(f) Statistics IV – 200 Marks, 3 Hours
Part II: The Interview (Personality Test) is worth 200 Marks
At the Viva Voce/ Personal Interview stage, candidates who have successfully qualified the written exam are interviewed by a board of competent and unbiased observers in order to check if the candidate is suitable for the post that he/she is competing for.
