The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) topped among the engineering and management categories in India’s first-ever ranking of the education institutions released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in New Delhi on Monday.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), a body constituted by the HRD ministry last year, surveyed more than 230 universities and 3,500 educational institutions across the country. While the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, bagged the top position in the NIRF ranking in engineering category, IIT and IIT Kharagpur stood at the second and third place, respectively.
The institutions were ranked on five basic criteria – teaching, learning and resources, research, professional practice and collaborative performance, graduation outcomes, outreach, and perception. The data submitted by the institutes were validated by the National Bureau of Accreditation, an independent agency. The first four parameters accounted for 90% of . For the perception criterion, feedback was taken from various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and alumni.
On this scale of 100, IIT Madras scored 89.42%, IIT Bombay got 87.67%, and IIT Kharagpur got 83.91%, bagging the first three ranks respectively. While got the highest ranking in the graduation outcome parameter, IIT Bombay secured the top position in outreach and perception, and IIT Kharagpur in teaching, learning, and research.
The IITs in Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Ropar, Patna and Guwahati scored in the range of 74% to 82%. IIT Guwahati missed the distinction mark by a whisker with a score of 74.63%. IIT Hyderabad emerged as a rising star by securing the seventh position. “We are pleased to bag the seventh position, which is the highest among all new IITs. It is an honour to be recognized and awarded. We certainly would like to do better and rank higher up in the coming years,” said Prof UB Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad. With a score of 67.68%, IIT Jodhpur got the lowest rank of 25.
In the management category, the first six positions were occupied by IIMs. IIM Bangalore topped the survey with a total score of 93.04%, followed by IIM Ahmedabad (89.92%), IIM Calcutta (87.45%), IIM Lucknow (86.13%), IIM Udaipur (84.23%) and IIM Kozhikode (81.97%).
IIM Bangalore obtained the highest score in the perception criteria whereas IIM Ahmedabad and Calcutta got the highest score in teaching, learning and research.
The IIMs which received lower than distinction scores were IIM Raipur at the 18th position with a score of 72.42%, IIM Rohtak at 19th rank with a score of 72.37% and IIM Kashipur with a score of 70.11%.
