Students of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR) have made a video on Ed Sheeran’s popular song ‘Shape of You’. The video shows four boys courting a girl. “It was uploaded on February 14, in about three days the video has received close to 20 lakh views on YouTube. We are overwhelmed by the response. Our primary aim was to roll out a cinematographic expression to Valentine’s Day”, said Chetan Maheshwari, Joint Secretary, Cinematic Section, IITR.
CineSec (short for Cinematic Section) is a campus group of movie-making enthusiasts working under the Cultural Council of IIT Roorkee. It consists of students from different disciplines sharing a common passion – film-making. Currently, it is a group of 44 members. Their works include various aspects of movie making as well as short movies, music videos, campus news etc. Maheshwari said, “We have a YouTube Channel, CineSec IITR where we keep releasing versatile content in various fields of entertainment.”
Speaking about work behind the scenes, Maheshwari said “The process began with watching a lot of music videos followed by plotting raw ideas down. In all, it took about 3 weeks to render the final product, followed by its active promotions.”
Students chose Ed Sheeran’s number because “Apart from its peppy beats and soothing rhythms, its lyrics were perfectly complimenting our story line”, said Maheshwari.
Maheswari added, “There is a common misconception about IITians, that we are just book-worms or geeks or nerds (and what not). And the truth is that in almost all IITs, the trend to follow cultural endeavours is widely appreciated (TVF is a popular example) and students know how to manage their time, juggling between their academics and hobbies efficiently.”
A quirky comment on the YouTube video joked about skewed sex ratio in IITs as there are four boys trying to woo a girl. Chetan said “We don’t really see it that way because there is hardly anything we can do about it. Its true that the ratio is a bit skewed and we hope it gets better in the years to come. Trust us, nobody would be more happier!”
