Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is the sixth member of the IIT fraternity. It was established in 1994 while the academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.The campus is on a sprawling 700 acres plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. The majestic Brahmaputra is to one side; with hills and vast open spaces on others.
The huge Academic Complex houses the academic departments, the centres, laboratories, classrooms, etc. The offices of the institute are in the Administrative Building. The lecture hall complex has four lecture halls, each capable of seating 250 scholars. An auditorium with a capacity of 1500 provides space for teaching and holding various events. The Sports Complex comprises of an indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis and squash courts, gymnasium and the Students Gymkhana office. There is also an 8 lane 50 m long swimming pool and flood-lit playing fields for all major outdoor games to provide recreation for the campus residents.
A 72-room Guest House, ample faculty and staff quarters, married students’ accommodation, eight men’s and one women’s hostels with single occupancy rooms form the residential component of the infrastructure. The Institute also has a hospital with 30 beds, a commercial complex with a restaurant and several shops and two community halls. There are two banks with ATM facilities, a post office with Railway Passenger Reservation facility, a pre-primary school-cum-creche, a Kendriya Vidyalaya and a bus service to the city.
Academics at IITG
At present the Institute has eleven departments and three inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines.
IITG offers the following programmes:
Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech ): Four years (8 semesters )
Bachelor of Design (B.Des.): Four years (8 semesters )
Master of Technology (M.Tech.): Two years (2-semester coursework + 2-semester project work)
Master of Design (M.Des.): Two years (4 semesters)
Master of Science (M.Sc.): Two years (4 semesters)
Master of Arts (MA) in Development Studies: Two years (4 semesters)
PhD programme are held twice a year – in July and January
Dual Degree (MTech+PhD)
Extra-Curricular Activities
Alcheringa,
popularly known as “Alcher” is the annual cultural extravaganza at
IITG. It is a four nights and three days festival. Techniche is the annual
techno-management festival held in September over three days.
