“The one thing that dosen’t abide by majority rule is person’s conscience.”
The author by above saying wants to say that no matter what the people say your conscience knows what the truth is and you will feel guilty if you do something wrong even if majority of people are of the same opinion. while this might be true for many people there are some people in this world who don’t feel any remorse or guilt even if they know what they are doing is wrong. They want to swim with the tide all their life with the tide. You can find many people in our country justifying their corrupt practices even though condemning corruption.They say that that they will stop being corrupt when others stop becoming so. They change their conscience as the wind changes its direction.
But not all people are so. History is full of examples of people who have brought revolutionary changes in society because they followed what their conscience asked them to and also went against the majority view of people even at times bringing a change in their conscience. Take the example of people like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Mahatama Jotiba phule who went against social evils like polygamy, child marriage etc. Also there are many people who feel remorse and guilt on doing anything which is immoral and unethical. The above saying is apt for all such people.
But the bigger question is can it be generalised for each and every one. I don’t think so. Many people let their conscience change as the society changes. Such people are said to be without any conscience. Their conscience is governed by what the majority says.
