This is the fourth article from the series – common terminologies used in botany. We will be elaborating on the parts of a flower in this article.
1. Calyx: It is the outermost whorl (arrangement of various parts of the flower) made up of leaf-like structures called sepals.
2. Corolla: It is part of flower that contains brightly coloured petals.
3. Peduncle: It is a part of stem that supports the inflorescence.
4. Style: It is the elongated portion of the pistil that connects the stigma and the ovary.
5. Stigma: It is a region at the tip of the pistil that receives pollen. Sticky or hairy surface of the stigma helps in trapping pollens.
6. Anther: It is the top portion of stamen that produces pollen grains.
7. Stamen: It is the male reproductive part of flower that is responsible for producing and releasing the pollen grains.
8. Pistil: It is the ovule or seed-bearing portion of the flower comprising style, stigma and the ovary.
9. Ovary: It is the lower portion of pistil that holds the ovules (structure that develops into a seed on fertilisation).
10. Androecium: It is part of flower (third whorl) that contains male reproductive structures called a stamen.
11. Gynoecium: This part (innermost whorl) contains female reproductive structures called carpels.
