In our previous article on the Engineering Services Examination, we had discussed this exam in brief. In this article, let us look at the structure of this exam in detail.
As we already know, the written part of this examination comprises two sections:
Section I: Objective type papers only and
Section II: Conventional papers
Both these sections would cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering discipline, i.e. Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical Engineering or Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

Standard and Syllabi for the Exam:
Part A: General English – These questions would be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
Part B: General Studies – This will include questions on current affairs, History of India, Geography of India and the world and other matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect.
Syllabus for Civil Engineering candidates (for Objective and Conventional papers):
Paper I:
Building materials, Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Design of steel structures,
Design of concrete and masonry structures, Construction practise, planning and management.
Paper II:
Fluid Mechanics, open channel flow, pipe flow, Hydraulic machines and hydropower, Hydrology, Water resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering Waste Water Engineering, Solid waste management, Air and Noise Pollutions and Ecology, Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Surveying, Transportation Engineering.
Syllabus for Mechanical Engineering candidates (for Objective and Conventional papers):
Paper I
Thermodynamics, cycles and IC Engines, Heat Transfers and Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Strength of Material, Fluid machinery and Steam Generators.
Paper II
Theory of Machines, Machine Design, Strength of materials, Engineering Materials, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Elements of Computation.
Syllabus for Electrical Engineering candidates (for Objective and Conventional papers)
Paper I
EM Theory, Electrical Materials, Electrical Circuits, Measurements and Instrumentation and Control Systems.
Paper II
Electrical Machines and Power Transformers, Power Systems, Analog and digital electronics and circuits, Microprocessors, Communication Systems and Power Electronics.
Syllabus for Electrical Engineering candidates (for Objective and Conventional papers):
Paper I
Materials and Components, Physical Electronics, Electron devices and ICs, Signals and Systems, Network Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, Electronic Measurements and Instrumentation.
Paper II
Analog Electronic Circuits, Digital Electronic circuits, Control Systems, Communication Systems, Microwave Engineering and Computer Engineering.
Personality Test
Those candidates who qualify the written examination are selected for the Personality Test which carries 200 marks. In this Test, special attention is paid to a candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative, intellectual curiosity and tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.
