Diversity refers to real or perceived physical or socio-cultural differences attributed to people and the representation of these differences in research, market spaces, and organizations. Equity refers to fairness in treating people regarding both opportunity and outcome. Inclusion refers to creating a culture that fosters belonging and incorporation of diverse groups. Learning to accept diversity helps in overcoming exclusion or marginalization.
We believe in leading with examples at K J Somaiya Institute of Management. Here are some instances of how diversity, equity, and inclusion are exercised daily on this campus.
To begin with, the theme for the upcoming 10th International HR Conference scheduled for the 23rd of January, 2023, is “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)- Making the Invisible Visible.” This conference will bring together practitioners, consultants, academicians, and students who can exchange their experiences of working in the DEI space and collaborate to normalize the concept of DEI so that everyone feels safe and included.Dr. Ritu Anand was also kind enough to join us on campus to conduct a talk with the faculty and students a few months ago. Dr. Ritu Anand is the Chief Leadership & Diversity Officer at Tata Consultancy Services.
The Institute also conducts sign language workshops to enable students to become better Managers, who can deal with varied corporate settings.
Inclusion and Equality at management schools are essential to the latest generations. K J Somaiya Institute of Management recently conducted a workshop about the importance and awareness of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Diversity helps in addressing issues of concern practically. That means incorporating any possible structural changes on campus to aid anyone with a physical or visual disability, for example, installing elevators that are big enough to accommodate wheelchairs all over the campus. The college also recently hosted a Disability Awareness Workshop. The Institute is driven toward creating awareness of physical impairments and conducting sensitivity training for students.
In addition to physical impairments, the college also gives tools to handle mental health. There is a free counselor available on campus every day. Institute counselors also guide the faculty in teaching specially-abled students or students with PTSD, attention disorders, cognitive ability disorders, and such.
