What are the opportunities for someone who takes up the program at IIHMR?
The opportunity in health sector in general and health management in particular are immense. Our graduates are single handedly responsible for bringing in the management aspect in healthcare. Our pool of about 2,000 graduates are engaged in improving working of the health sector as hospital managers, healthcare managers and Healthcare IT managers. They are actively engaged in managing healthcare organizations across country and beyond. Over the period of 17 years, our students have grown to CEO position in many healthcare organizations and medical universities. Some of our students are engaged in academic teaching and research after obtained advanced degrees in the discipline. Therefore the window of opportunities is unlimited.
I have seen a lot of Doctors taking up your program. Are Doctors the most suited profiles for this program or anyone else with a different profile can also apply?
This is one myth we need to shatter and that’s where I need help of this channel. Our program is open to any graduate with an aptitude for management. Of late this perception has gone to the market that this program is more suited for medical and allied professionals but this is not true. We transform graduates of any discipline to healthcare managers and every graduate has equal opportunity and potential to be a manager. Our program has proved that time and again.
You have 3 campuses. How are each different in its deliverable? How do candidate choose from the 3 campuses?
It’s a difficult question. All three campuses are unique in terms of their location and strength. The Delhi campus is located in the thick of action in the country and the region. It gives us access to a pool of health professionals and healthcare organizations along with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and international and National NGOs. Jaipur is the oldest campus and Bangalore campus is located in the IT city. What’s same across campuses is the course curriculum and rigor of the program along with academic value of the faculty. Whichever campus you choose these standards will remain the same. The students can choose depending of their comfort and location as well as their merit standing in the admission list.
What are the major trends in your HealthCare Management industry that you are training your students for?
We train them for being holistic managers and lay emphasis on four cardinal functions of management. They are planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Many of our recruiters have been sharing their feedback with us on regular basis and we keep on improvising our curriculum to suit the industry requirements.
What are the top challenges that you face as a faculty in such a niche domain?
Ours is a unique domain and needs trans-disciplinary skill set. For example a finance specialist is also supposed to have working knowledge of health and hospital sector. Therefore our faculty’s domain interface remains a challenge. Secondly the fast changing requirements of the sector also keep our faculty busy as they need to update their skills on regular basis.
Another challenge is creating awareness and working with top policy managers about the need to mainstream our healthcare managers in their regular cadre.
