1. Japan remembers Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings
(i) Three days after an atomic bomb devastated Hiroshima, another one was dropped by the US forces on the city of Nagasaki during the World War II in 1945.
(ii) This incident that occurred 70 years ago, killing thousands instantly. Tens of thousands of people post bombing succumbed to radiation sickness.
(iii) Memorial services were held in Nagasaki Peace Park, in the presence of guests from 75 countries, including US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.
(iv) Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, “As the only country ever attacked by an atomic bomb … we have a mission to create a world without nuclear arms.”
2. Centre launches Nai Manzil for minorities
(i) Dr. Najma Heptulla, the Union Minister for Minority Affairs launched a new scheme called Nai Manzil for minorities on 8th August 2015.
(ii) The scheme aims to “bridge the academic and skill
development gaps of the deeni Madrasa passouts with their mainstream
counterparts.” Training in 4 courses namely, manufacturing, engineering, services and soft skills will be provided.
(iii) It will help madrassa students write central board
examinations, thereby equipping them to secure admission to universities. It will also provide bridge courses to people within 17-35 years of age to help them pass STD X and XII exams through distance
learning.
3. Swacch Bharat rankings – Mysore tops the list
(i) Swacch Bharat rankings were released on August 9 after conducting survey of 476 cities. As per the findings, top three clean cities are Mysore (Karnataka), Tiruchirapalli or Trichy (Tamil Nadu) and Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra).
(ii) The ranking is based on the extent of open defecation and solid waste management in cities.
(iii) The survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Urban Development as required under the National Sanitation Policy 0f 2008.
4. iPad-manufacturer Foxconn invests in Maharashtra
(i) Terry Gou, Chairman of Foxconn, which is the world’s largest manufacturer of contract electronics has announced his plans to set up factories across India over the next decade in the spirit of the ‘Make in India’ campaign.
(ii) The company also declared a $5 billion investment in Maharashtra over the next 5 years.
iii) The unit will be somewhere between Mumbai and Pune for which the government has identified around 1,500 acres. This factory will initially provide about 50,000 jobs . CM Devendra Fadnavis has welcomed Foxconn’s decision and the government has promised all the required support.
5. Amitabh Bachchan to be the brand Ambassador of Khadi
(i) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) CEO Arun
Kumar Jha confirmed that actor Amitabh Bachchan has agreed to be the brand ambassador
of Khadi fabric without fee.
(ii) Jha said that there are about 7,000 government-recognised Khadi outlets in the country and that the aim is increase the figure to 20,000 by 2017 through franchise agreements.
(iii) KVIC, a statutory body under the Ministry of Micro, Small and
Medium Enterprises, plans and implements programmes for the development of
Khadi and other village industries in the rural areas.
