1. J Manjula became the first women chief of DRDO
(i) In an recent announcement, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has appointed a woman as the Director General, Electrons and Communication systems cluster.
(ii) J Majula will take charge from Dr K D Nayak who was former the DG of DRDO.
(iii) J Manjula has received several awards in course of her distinguished career- recent being the India Today Woman Summit Award for 2014 and she was also the recipient of DRDO’s Scientist of the Year 2011 and Performance Excellence.
2. Central Armed forces to have 33% reservation for women
(i) Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, announced that CISF will be the first among Central Armed Police Forces to achieve 33 percent reservation for women.
(ii) He said that that women represent 5.04 per cent of CISF force and the Centre had issued a circular to Union Territories wherein they have been directed to recruit 33 per cent women in police forces and similarly participation of women should increase in central paramilitary forces.”
(iii) The Home Minister announced this decision whilst he was addressing the passing out parade of Assistant Commandants and Sub-Inspectors of CISF at Hyderabad.
3. Cabinet approved 6% hike in dearness allowance the government employees
(i) Union cabinet, on Wednesday approved of a 6% hike in the dearness allowances of government employees and pensioners which will benefit 48 lakh government employees and 55 lakh pensioners.
(ii) The Dearness allowances now stand at 119 per cent after the hike.
(iii) The DA hike is determined by an accepted formula based on the recommendation of the 6th pay commission and is in proportion of the basic pay.
4. Indian and UK to work towards a FinTech Bridge
(i) In an recent development it was announced that India and Britain are to collaborate to create a ‘FinTech bridge’ between the two countries.
(ii) Britain’s Minister of State for Trade & Investment Francis Maude remarked, ‘Fintech is a fast-growing area of business, providing IT solutions in the financial services industry and whether their focus is financial inclusion or access to lending.’
(iii) This initiative is expected to encourage close partnership and investment in Britain and Indian Fin Tech companies.
5. France to close down oldest nuclear plant before 2018
(i) The French Government announced the decision of closing down the nation’s oldest nuclear power plant earlier this September.
(ii) The plant is to shut down no later than 2018 as part of the plan to reduce dependency on nuclear power.
(iii) The French Parliament, passed a law in July to reduce the share of nuclear power to 50 per cent by 2025 from the current 75 per cent, which is higher than any other country in the World.
6. Bombay Stock Exchange has the highest number of listed companies
(i) In September 2015, the World Federation of Exchanges (WEF) announced that the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has the highest number of listed companies in the world — a total of 5689.
(ii) Though the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) leads in the category of the highest listed companies, it was Shanghai stock exchange of China (having 1070 companies) which was at the top in terms of value of share trading with 30 trillion US dollars worth transactions as of June 2015.
7. India ranks among the bottom 11 of Asia Pacific Economies in terms of entry level salaries
(i) As per the latest survey released by Tower Watson India ranks amongst the lowest in the Asia Pacific region when it comes to entry level salaries to its graduates.
(ii) At an average pay of USD 400, Indian graduates starting salary are in the bottom three of the 11 Asia Pacific economies, ranking 9th.
(iii) The ranking revealed that Indian entry level salaries were less than a fifth of what is being paid to counterparts in South Korea and Singapore.
8. Government launches Nirayat Bandhu@ your desktop
(i) The union government on September 9th, launched an online certificate programme for exporters and importers named ‘Niryat Bandhu@ your desktop.’
(ii) This certificate programme was launched under the Niryat Bandhu Scheme of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) with a view that new and potential importers and exporters can learn the essentials of trade.
(iii) The first course with a capacity of 60 students is to begin from October.
9. Gandhi Peace Prize 2014 conferred on ISRO
(i) On September 9th, President Pranab Mukherjee awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
(ii) The award was received on behalf of ISRO by chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar in new Delhi.
(iii) The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted in the year 1995 and is an annual award conferred on individuals and institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.
10. E- Version of collected works of Gandhi released
(i) On September 8th, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitely paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by releasing the e-version of the collected works of Mahatma Gandhi.
(ii) In 1994, the the Publications Division under the ministry of information and broadcasting had published the collected works of Mahatma Gandhi in book form with an edition of of it in Hindi too.
(iii) The digital version can also be accessed on the internet for people around the world.
11. Deepak Lather bags a gold at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games
(i) Indian weightlifter Deepak Lather made his presence felt at the Fifth Youth Commonwealth Games as he won the Gold in 62 kg category.
(ii) This was India’s second gold in weightlifting after Jamming Deru won a gold in 56 kg category on the day one of the event.
(iii) India will be representing in 9 disciplines by a total of 25 athletes at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) being held in Apia, Samoa.
12. Anirban Lahiri becomes first Indian Golfer to qualify for the President’s Cup
(i) On September 7, Anirban Lahiri became the first Indian golfer to have qualified for the President’s Cup.
(ii) Lahiri qualified for it by being part of the top 10 international players of the official world golf ranking as the conclusion of the 2015 Deutsch Bank Championship.
(iii) The President’s cup championship will be held in October 2015 at Incheon in South Korea.
