1. Sierra Leone likely to be declared ebola-free 

(i)

As per latest media
reports, Sierra Leone, a country in west Africa, will be declared ebola-free by
the World Health Organisation (WHO) when it will have gone 42 days without
reporting any fresh case. 

(ii)

So far, the disease
has killed 3,589 people in Sierra Leone-221 of them health workers, including
11 of the country’s 120 doctors. Overall, the death toll for the outbreak in
west Africa stands at 11,313.

(iii) However, the doctors in Freetown, the nations’ capital, are cautious and said that lessons had to be learned from Liberia, where one isolated case, thought to have been transmitted sexually, was recorded weeks after the country was declared ebola-free in May. 

2. France to contribute 2 billion euros for smart cities project in India

(i) Recently, France became the first country to have committed 2 billion Euros to India’s Smart CityProject. 

Francois Richier, ambassador of France in India  announced that around €2 billion will be provided to convert Chandigarh, Nagpur and Puducherry into smart cities. 

(iii) Apart from France, other countries, including the US, Japan, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and  Singapore have entered into partnerships and have chosen their preferred cities to invest in, no     figure has been given out.

3. Forbes releases list of the World’s Most Powerful People 2015

(i) Forbes on Wednesday released the Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful People 2015, which provides the annual ranking of the World’s 73 Most Powerful People. 

(ii) As per the list, Russian President is the most powerful person in the World, followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and in third place was US president Barack Obama. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ranked 9th on the list.

4. National Green Tribunal directs Delhi and Northern states to check crop burning 

(i) The National Green Tribunal (NGT),  taking into consideration the increasing pollution in capital due to spate of crop burning asked states to notify steps to check the menace and imposed fines on farmers indulging in such activities. 

(ii) NGT has asked states governments of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi to issue notifications in this regard and fine farmers indulging in these activities. The fine  is expected to be in the range of Rs.2,500 – Rs 15,000.

5. Andhra Pradesh to link all important rivers soon 

(i) The Andhra Pradesh state government recently announced that it would link  all important rivers in the north coastal Andhra including Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers with the view to give priority to  irrigation projects. 

(ii) State Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao during a review meeting with irrigation department engineers in Visakhapatnam said this will be done with the same inspiration of linking of Krishna-Godavari Rivers.

(iii) The minister further added that  despite its huge deficit budget, the government has allocated Rs 16,500 crore for the construction of irrigation projects.

6. Jitu Rai bags silver at 13th Asian Shooting Championship

(i)  In a recent development, Ace shooter Jitu Rai won India’s first senior medal at the 13th Asian Shooting Championship held in Kuwait. 

(ii) Rai bagged a silver, only behind Korea’s Park Daehun in the finals of the men’s 50 metre pistol event. India also won Four Silver and Two Bronze medals in the junior events of the championships.
