1. Maldives declares emergency for period of 30 days 

(i) The Maldives government recently declared a state of emergency for a period of 30 days as it perceived a threat to the national security and safety of citizens. This decision was taken after a cache of arms was discovered by the police at the nation’s capital.

(ii) Concerns about national security is high after the explosion on President Abdulla Yameen’s speed boat on September 28 that resulted in his wife and two aides getting injured.

(iii) Article 253 of Maldivian constitution gives powers to the President to declare emergency and suspend certain laws and citizens’ rights.

2. SunEdison to supply cheapest solar power in India

(i) SunEdison recently won the bid to sell solar power in India at a record low tariff-the firm quoted Rs.4.63 per KWh as its tariff and won the auction for a 500MW project in Andhra Pradesh.

(ii) Narendra Modi-led NDA government has been pushing for clean energy in order to combat climate change and reduced rates mean that the government would enhance its support for wind and solar energy. 

(iii) The government expects clean energy to yield business worth $160 billion in India in the next five years, and experienced US-based firms like SunEdison and First Solar Inc are likely to reap the benefits.

3. Suresh Patel appointed as MD and CEO of Andhra Bank 

(i) On November 2, 2015, Suresh N Patel was appointed as the MD and CEO of Andhra Bank. 

(ii) Patel started his career with Dena Bank and has around 30 years of experience in the banking sector. Previously, he had been the CEO of Association of Mutual Funds in India.

4. Maharashtra government launches APJ Abdul Kalam Amrut Yojna

(i) Maharashtra government approved a revised scheme to provide nutrition to pregnant and lactating women in the state’s tribal areas. 

(ii) Named APJ Abdul Kalam Amrut Yojna, the scheme aims to provide “one full hot cooked nutritious food” to every pregnant lady and lactating mother. 

(iii) The scheme will be implemented by aanganwadis that come under the Women and Child Welfare Department in 16 districts having tribal population.

5. Government issues showcause notice to Volkswagen 

(i) On November 4, 2015, the Indian government issued a showcause notice to global car manufacturer Volkswagen after the testing agency Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) found “significant variations” in the emission levels of the firm’s three diesel models in India, namely Jetta, Audi A4 and Vento.

(ii) Recently, Volkswagen admitted that 11 million diesel engine cars worldwide were fitted with the software that facilitated manipulation of emission tests. It faces a fine of up to $18 billion in the US.

6. Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik announces his retirement 

(i) Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik announced his retirement from Test cricket. 

(ii) The 33-year-old returned to the longer format of the game after five years and made a career-best of 245 in the first innings of the three-match Test series against England in Abu Dhabi. 

(iii) So far, he has played 35 Tests, scoring 1,898 runs with three centuries and eight half-centuries and has taken 29 wickets.

7. Boxer Shiva Thapa ranked World No. 2

(i) Recently, Shiva Thapa became the highest ranked Indian boxer and moved up to the second spot in the latest international rankings after winning a bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha in October. 

(iI) He has moved up five places to be in the second spot with 1550 points in the 56kg category.

(iii) Irish boxer Michael Conlan tops the list with 2150 points; he won the gold medal at the World Championships.
