1. Myanmar declares emergency as the flood situation worsens

(i) Tens and thousands of homes have been washed away and 27 people have been reported killed so far in the Myanmar  floods which continues to disrupt the normal life in state. 

(ii)  The state has declared emergency, as authorities struggle to rescue people in flood hit areas, decimating thousands of households and fields.

(iii) Myanmar’s President visited the worst-hit areas by floods on Sunday, in addition the government declared four worst hit areas in central and western as,’natural disaster hit regions. The winds and rains from cyclone Komen have aggravated the situation in recent days.

2. Obama to unveil the clean power plan to tackle greenhouse gas emission today 

(i) In what is reported as one of the strongest actions taken by the Unites States of America to tackle Climate Change, President Obama is to unveil environmental regulations aimed at sharply cutting the green house gas emissions from US coal -fired power plants and eventually transform US electricity industry today.

(ii)  The Plan will seek to slash carbon emissions from the power sector by 32 percent by year 2030 from 2005 levels and it shows a 9 percent increase over a previous proposal. These strict changes are aimed at bringing about sweeping transformation in the electricity sector encouraging shift towards renewable energy  and avoiding the coal fired electricity. 

(iii)  The white house, in its press release states this move as, “the starting gun for an all-out climate push” by the president and his cabinet to deal with Climate change. 

3. HDFC Bank and Snapdeal launch co-branded e-commerce credit card

(i) Snapdeal, an online market giant with HDFC bank launched a co-branded credit card in partnership with Visa . 

(ii)

The Snapdeal HDFC
Bank credit card will help customers from tier 2 and 3 markets realise the
power of technology and provide them with the convenience and flexibility of
completing payments online, whenever they choose.

(iii) Further,

Snapdeal will also reward
customers for making digital payments through the co-branded card.

4.  Nigerian troops rescue 178 people from Boko Haram 

(i) The Nigerian Army troops, in one of its successful operations rescued 178 Nigerian civilians from the captivity of Boko Haram, which is one of the brutal jihadi extremist group based out of Northeastern Nigeria.

(ii) Of the three civilians, 101 were children, along with 67 women and 10 men. In addition to rescue operation the Nigerian Air Force destroyed the camps of the extremist group in Maiduguri village killing a large number of militants, as per the official press release.  

5. Winter Olympics 2022 to be hosted in Beijing

(i) Beijing, won its bid to host 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first city to have been awarded both summer and winter Games.

(ii)  Beijing received 44 votes,  leaving  Almaty, a city on Kazakhstan behind by four votes.

(iii) The city of Oslo, Norway was initially  decided upon as a finalist, but its Olympic bid was withdrawn after the Norwegian government voted against financially supporting the games.

6. Joshna Chinappa wins Victoria Open WSA event

(i) Joshna Chinappa, the Indian champion won the women’s squash title with USD 15,000 at Victoria Open WSA event becoming second seed in  Melbourne, Australia on Sunday. 

(ii) Joshna defeated Dane 1-5, 11-4, 11-9 in the final of the WSA event.

(iii) In the men’s title, Australian Ryan  Cuskelly defeated Greg Lobban of Scotland 12-10, 13-11, 11-9.

7. Indian Golfer Ranveer Singh Saini creates history

(i) Indian Golfer Ranveer Saini became the first Indian to have won Gold medal at the special Olympics game in Los Angeles.

(ii) Saini, is an autistic golfer who achieved this feat in GF Golf – level 2 alternate shot team play event.

(iii) Two years ago,Saini became the first Indian golfer to win  two gold medals at the Asia Pacific World games.
