1. Kolkata – Agartala bus service via Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital, starts from 01st June, 2015
(i) A trial run of the Kolkata – Agartala Bus Service via Dhaka began on Monday
(ii) The total time taken on this route, including the formalities of immigration centre checks, is about 14 – 16 hours.
2. Bangladesh Liberation Award for Vajpayee
(i) The Government of Bangladesh is set to honour former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country’s liberation from Pakistan in 1971.
(ii) He will be conferred with, ‘Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award’ on June 6th, 2015.
(iii) Indira Gandhi was the first foreign friend who was posthumously honoured with the ‘Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award’.
3. Government and the opposition agree on the names of CIC and CVC
(i) The Government and the opposition have agreed on the names to fill the vacant positions of Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
(ii) Following a meeting involving PM Narendra Modi and leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, the recommended list of names have been forwarded to the president for his assent. The final decision on the names will be made after President Pranab Mukherjee’s assent.
4. George Yeo, former Singapore foreign minister, appointed Chancellor of Nalanda University
(i) The Ministry of External Affairs announced that the former Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo would be the new Chancellor of the Nalanda University in Bihar.
(ii) Mr Yeo has been awarded the Padma Bhushan recognising the outstanding work he has to his credit in the field of Public Affairs.
(iii) He will take over from Noble Laureate Amartya Sen, who withdrew his candidature and decided against serving as the Chancellor for the second consecutive term.
5. Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa became 19th Governor of Arunachal Pradesh
(i) Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa was sworn in as the 19th Governor of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday.
(ii) He is a former IAS officer and has served as Assam Chief Secretary earlier.
(iii) He will take over his duties from Lt. Gen. Nirbhaya Sharma.
6. Uttarakhand Health Minister conferred with the World No Tobacco Day Award
(i) The World No Tobacco Day was observed on 31st May. On this day, the campaign ‘Stop illicit trade of tobacco products’ was launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
(ii) S.S Negi, the Health and Family Welfare Minister of Uttarakhand, was conferred with ‘World No Tobacco Day Award’ for his accomplishments in tobacco control.
7. Muhammadu Buhari becomes the fifth President of Nigeria
(i) Opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari won the Presidential elections in Nigeria, defeating Goodluck Jonathan.
(ii) The 72 year old Buhari, a retired General, is the leader of the All Progressive Congress Party (APC). The failure of the present dispensation to deal with Boko Haram and stabilise the economy helped propel Buhari to victory in the election.
8. Sania – Hingis enter Women’s Doubles quarterfinals in the French Open
(i) Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis swept their way to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Doubles at the French open with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Karin Knapp and Roberta Vinci.
(ii) In the Men’s Doubles however, India’s challenge ended short with the defeat of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna
