1. Former Indian President A.P.J Abdul Kalam passes away
(i) Former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam, passed away on July 27 after a cardiac arrest during a lecture at IIM – Shillong.
(ii) The former President was confirmed dead over two hours later after he was admitted in the ICU of Bethany hospital in Nongrim hills in critical condition.
(iii) Abdul Kalam, won many titles for his contributions, namely ‘missile man’ or ‘people’s president’, among others. PM Narendra Modi in the condolence meet referred to him as the ‘Rashtra Ratna” (nation’s gem) and reiterated that the best way to pay tribute to Abdul Kalam’s life was by realising his dreams.
2. India signs loan agreement with Asian Development Bank
(i) India took a loan worth $300 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM).
(ii) NUHM aims to improve the health status of the country’s urban population.
(iii) The signatories to the loan also signed the accompanying capacity building technical assistance of USD 2 million, financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction.
3. Two Indians win Ramon Magsaysay Award 2015
(i) India’s Sanjeev Chaturvedi and Anshu Gupta won the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award 2015.
(ii) Sanjeev Chaturvedi, is an Indian Forest Officer and Anshu Gupta is the founder of the NGO Goonj.
(iii) The Ramon Magsaysay Award, established since 1957, is Asia’s highest honour. It celebrates the memory and leadership example of the third Philippine President, after whom it is named. It is awarded annually to individuals or organisations in Asia for their selfless service and transformative influence that were of prime importance to the Filipino leader.
4. R S Sharma appointed as the TRAI chairman
(i) Information Technology secretary, R S Sharma has been appointed as the new Telecom and Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman.
(ii) The appointment was approved by the Cabinet committee for a period of three years.
(iii) R S Sharma is an Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) of the 1978 Jharkhand batch and is to replace Rahul Khullar, who retired in May.
5. Indian women’s archery team makes it to Olympics
(i) The Indian women’s archery recurve team has made it to the 2016 Olympics, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, after getting past seventh seed Germany in the round of 16 tie at the World Archery Championship in Copenhagen on Tuesday.
(ii) The women’s team – led by Deepika Kumari, Laxmi Rani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly – had shot together 1907 points after 216 arrows to finish 10th on July 27, with the former world No. 1 Deepika finishing eighth in the individual competition.
(iii) The men’s team however, could not confirm their place in the upcoming Olympics.
