1. S. Jaishankar appointed
new Foreign Secretary
i. S Jaishankar, India’s Ambassador to the US,
was appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. He replaced Sujatha Singh.
ii. A 1977-batch IFS officer, Jaishankar, who had
only two days to go for his retirement, will take over on Thursday and will
have a two-year tenure as per the rules.
iii. Before being appointed as the top envoy to
the US last year, Jaishankar was India’s Ambassador to China.
iv. 60-year-old Jaishankar, son of late K
Subrahmanyam, one of India’s leading strategic analysts, was a key member of
the Indian team which negotiated the landmark Indo-US nuclear deal.
v. The decision to appoint Jaishankar, who
played a key role during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in
September and US President Barack Obama’s just concluded visit here, was taken
by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). The ACC is chaired by Modi.
2. India to
host T20 World Cup in 2016
i. India will host the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup.
ii. The world cup of the shortest format in cricket
will be played from the 11th of March to the 3rd of April 2016.
3. Shekhar Sen is new Chairman
of Sangeet Natak Akademi
i. Shekhar Sen has been appointed Chairman of the Sangeet
Natak Akademi for a period of five years.
ii. The post
had been lying vacant since October 2014, when danseuse Leela Samson quit as
its Chairperson.
iii. Shekhar Sen is a Padma Shri awardee and also a music
composer-singer-lyricist.

Sangeet Natak Akademi
The Akademi is an autonomous body funded by
the Ministry of Culture. Inaugurated on January 28, 1953 by India’s first
President, Rajendra Prasad, it was set up to promote performing arts, such as
dance, drama and music, across the country.
4. Japan’s Otomo first manga artist to win top
French prize
i. Japan’s
Katsuhiro Otomo became the first manga cartoonist to win a lifetime achievement
award at France’s renowned international Angouleme comics festival.
ii. The 60 year old is known the
world over for the cult manga series Akira, set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo
built on the ashes of a city that was destroyed by a blast that triggered World
War III.
iii. The awarding of the Grand Prix – which last
year went to Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson – to Otomo highlights the
importance of mangas in France, where they represent a quarter of all comic
book sales.
5. Serena Williams will face Maria
Sharapova in the final of Australian Open
i. Serena Williams will face Maria
Sharapova in the final of the Australia Open Women’s Singles.
ii. Serena Williams beat fellow
American Madison Keys 7-6(7-5) 6-2 to reach the finals.
iii. World number two Sharapova beat
fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-2.
6. Andy
Murray enters Australian Open final
i. Andy Murray has reached the men’s
singles final of the Australian Open.
ii. Murray defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in four
sets 6-7 6-0 6-3 7-5 in the first semi finals in Melbourne .
