1. Raja Rajeswari became first Indian-American woman judge in New York
i. Raja Rajeswari has has been sworn-in as a criminal court judge in New York by Mayor Bill de Blasio, becoming the first India-born woman to be appointed a judge in New York City.
ii. She was born in Chennai, India and migrated to the U.S. from Chennai as a teenager.
iii. Previously she worked with the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office for her entire career in several bureaus including Criminal Court, Narcotics, Supreme Court, and the Sex Crimes Special Victims Bureau, where she last served as Deputy Chief.
iv. The mayor appoints judges to 10-year terms in the New York City Criminal Court and the Family Court within the city.
2. NASA launches project NExSS to search for alien life
i. The US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched the programme The Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS), which aims to better understand the various components of an exoplanet.
ii. NASA has launched an ambitious project that will lead the search for signs of life beyond our solar system.
iii. The Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS) initiative will bring together the “best and brightest” and marshal the expertise of 10 universities, three NASA centres and two research institutes, the US space agency said.
3. French Government honoured Yashwant Sinha with Officier de la Légion d’Honneur
i. The French Government honoured former Union Finance Minister and veteran BJP leader Yashwant Sinha the Officier de la Légion d’Honneur(Officer of the Legion of Honour).
ii. The award was given in recognition of his valuable contribution to thought on international issues.
iii. This is the highest French civilian distinction was presented by the French Ambassador François Richier on behalf of the President of the French Republic
Note: The award was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients. The President of the French Republic is the Grand Master of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
4. Loretta Lynch became first African-American woman Attorney General
i. Loretta Lynch has sworn-in as United States’ first African-American woman Attorney General. She succeeded Eric Holder who left the position on April 24, 2015 after serving Attorney General for six years.
ii. She is 83rd Attorney General of country.
iii. Lynch was born on May 21, 1959 in Greensboro, North Carolina. She is graduate from Harvard College in 1981 and holds Bachelor of Arts in English and American literature.
5. Omar al-Bashir re-elected Sudan President for next term
i. Omar al-Bashir has won Presidential re-election by securing 94 per cent of the vote and re – elected as a Sudan President for the additional term of five years.
ii. He is in power since 1989. In this election Omar’s National Congress Party (NCP) also won 323 of 426 parliamentary seats.
6. Sarjubala, Pinki clinch gold medals for India at President’s Cup
i. India’s Shamjetsabam Sarjubala (48kg) and Pinki Jangra (51kg) have clinched god medals at the 22nd President’s Cup Open International Boxing Tournament in Indonesia.
ii. At Palembang, South Sumatra, Pinki, a Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist, defeated Mongolia’s Nandintsetseg 2-1 to notch up the yellow metal.
iii. India ended with two gold medals at the event.
7. Wladimir Klitschko retains heavyweight title
i. Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine defeated American challenger Bryant Jennings in the final and successfully defended his world heavyweight boxing title for the 18th time in a row.
ii. His next title defence is likely to be a mandatory WBA bout against Briton Tyson Fury.
8. India won President’s Cup Boxing Tournament
i. India has been crowned for the first time as the champions in the 22nd President’s Cup Boxing Tournament being held at Palembang, Indonesia.
ii. Rakesh Kumar in 69 kg weight class and Harpal Singh in 75kg category struck gold on the final day of the competition as Indian team logged 33 points to finish ahead of second-placed Mongolia.
iii. Gold medal from Rakesh and Harpal took the country’s total tally to four gold and a bronze at the end of the event.
9. Ratchanok Intanon won women’s title of Badminton Asia Championships 2015
i. Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand defeated top seed Li Xuerui of China by 20-22, 23-21, 21-12 in the final and won the women’s title of Badminton Asia Championships 2015.
10. Lin Dan won men’s title of Badminton Asia Championships 2015
i. Lin Dan of China defeated Tian Houwei by 21-19, 21-8 in the final and won the men`s title at Badminton Asia Championships 2015 held in the central city of Wuhan, China.
ii. With this he won the Asian championship for the fourth time. Lin, the No. 2 seed, is a five-time world champion and twice Olympic gold medallist.
Note: In the men`s doubles, Lee Yong-Dae and Yoo Yeon-Seong of South Korea defeated Indonesia`s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 18-21, 24-22, 21-19.
