BMB conferred with the Asian Banker Achievement Award 2015

i. Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) Ltd  has won the Asian Banker Achievement Award 2015. It was awarded for Technology Implementation in the category of Best Outsourcing Project (New Bank).

ii. The award was received by Usha Ananthasubramanian, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of BMB at a function held in Hong Kong during the Asian Banker Summit 2015.

2. Govt. allows EPFO to invest 5% of its amount in stock market

i. The government has allowed retirement fund body Employee’s Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to invest five percent of its amount in exchange traded funds.

ii. It will result into an inflow of around five thousand crore rupees into the stock markets during this fiscal.

iii. Labour Secretary Shankar Aggarwal said, investment will begin by one per cent and go up to five per cent by the end of this financial year.

iv. As per estimates, the EPFO’s incremental deposits for 2014-15 would be around 80 thousand crore rupees.

3. South Korea’s PM quit, over bribery scandal

i. Prime Minster Lee Wan has resigned from his post over the bribery scandal, involving a dead businessman and other high-profile figures.

ii. South Korea’s president has accepted the resignation of her prime minister on account of a bribery scandal.

iii. Businessman Sung Wan-jong said before committing suicide this month that he gave 30 million won ($27,390) to Lee in 2013. Lee has denied the allegation.

iv. President Park Geun-hye’s office said on Monday she accepted Lee’s resignation but gave no further details.

Note: Executive power in South Korea is concentrated in the president, but the prime minister leads the government if the president becomes incapacitated.

4. Rohit Sharma nominated for Arjuna Award

i. Indian batsman Rohit Sharma has been nominated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for this year Arjuna Award.

ii. The Arjuna Awards is instituted in 1961, which is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, government of India to recognize outstanding achievement in National sports.

5. Gopinath Pillai awarded with the Outstanding Service Award

i. Gopinath Pillai, an Indian-origin diplomat awarded with the Outstanding Service Award for his services in Singapore by the National University of Singapore (NUS).

ii. Presently, he is serving as Ambassador-at-Large of Singapore and special envoy to Andhra Pradesh.

iii. He is the chairman of Management Board of the Institute of South Asian Studies, a National University of Singapore funded research institute.

6. Sangeeta Bhatia won the 2015 Heinz Award

i. Indian origin scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Sangeeta Bhatia has won the prestigious 2015 Heinz Award in the Technology, the Economy, and Employment category.

ii. This was the 20th Heinz Award which is given annually since 1993.

7. K Vijay, Telugu film choreographer dies in Nepal

i. A young Telugu movie choreographer K Vijay died in accident in Nepal when the SUV in which he was travelling with other crew members overturned due to rain and aftershock of earthquake.

ii. The vehicle met with the accident as it was raining and an aftershock of the earthquake was felt in the wee hours today at around 2 am.

iii. Vijay, who is related to the producer of the film, Kishan, died in the tragedy.

iv. The film unit, comprising nearly 20 members, reported safe in the quake as they were shooting in the open.

8. Google India is best employer

i. Google India has been awarded with the Randstad Award 2015 for ‘Most Attractive Employer in India’, which is followed by Sony India.

ii. The fifth edition of the Randstad Awards event was held in Delhi. Microsoft India has been inducted into the Hall of Fame category this year for winning the title for four consecutive years.

iii. The Randstad Award is given every year to encourage best practices for talent attraction and to identify the best ‘Employer Brand’ in the country based on perceived attractiveness of a company.

9. YES Bank opens first overseas branch in Abu Dhabi

i. YES Bank, India’s fifth largest private sector bank has opened its first overseas representative office in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

ii. The bank has opened its door to NRI population residing in the UAE with this new representative office.

iii. “It will provide services for unique investment needs of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf city through its flagship Global Indian Banking programme,” YES Bank said in a statement.

10. Operation Maitri launched to help and rescue people in quake-hit Nepal

i. India has launched a relief and rescue Operation named Maitri in earthquake hit Nepal.

ii. The Maitri operation will consist of more than two dozen military aircraft and choppers along with bus services through road route.

iii. India also pressed nearly 1000 trained personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) into service after Nepal on 25 April 2015 was struck by the worst earthquake in 80 years in which more than 2500 people were killed.

11. India’s Healthcare Portal launched by PM of India

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India’s Healthcare Portal at the SAAARC Trade Mart in the Global Exhibition on Services, in ITPO, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

ii. The portal is an authentic and dynamic information source which can effectively be used by any treatment seeker/potential medical tourist from across the globe.
iii. At present, the portal covers 124 accredited medical facilities which include 93 medical centres, 30 Ayurveda and Wellness centres and 1 special category centre. 74 facilities are located in Tier I cites and the rest are in Tier II cities. The Healthcare Portal can be seen at www.indiahealthcaretourism.com

12. Master Deenanath Maneshkar award conferred on Anil Kapoor

i. The prestigious Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award 2015 has been conferred on Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor.

ii. Apart from Anil Kapoor, veteran Marathi actor Dilip Prabhavalkar was also bestowed with the prestigious Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award 2015.

iii. In 2014, the award was given to Bollywood legend Rishi Kapoor and eminent musician Zakir Hussain. Note: In 1999 Master Dinanath Mangeshkar was instituted in memory of Dinanath Mangeshkar, father of Lata Mangeshkar. Since then it is awarded annually to persons for their outstanding contributions to music and movies.

13. Ratan Tata
buys stake in Xiamoi

i. Indian businessman and industrialist, Ratan
Tata has acquired a stake in Chinese phone maker, Xiamoi technology. Chinese
phone maker’s presence in the world’s third -largest smart -phone market.

ii. Xiaomi, the No. 3 global smartphone maker,
was valued at $45 billion after a December funding round.

iii. Xiaomi and other Chinese smartphone makers
are drafting in cricket teams and Bollywood stars to conquer India, their
largest overseas market and a key testing ground for their international
expansion.
