1. New Zealand beat South Africa, enter into WC final for 1st time
i. New Zealand enters into the Cricket World Cup final for the first time, after beating South Africa by 4 wickets in a thrilling semi-final at Auckland today.
ii. Opting to bat first, South Africa posted 281, after rain reduced the game to 43 overs a side.
iii. The target for the Kiwis, via the Duckworth-Lewis method, was revised to 298 in 43 overs.
iv. Chasing 298 for victory in 43 overs, the hosts overhauled the target on the second last ball of the final over.
v. Grant Elliott, who top scored with an unbeaten 84, hit a six to take his team into the final, was adjudged man of the match. vi. The second semi-final between defending champions India and Australia will be played on Thursday at Sydney.
vii. The final will be played on Sunday at Melbourne.
2. SC crushed down Section 66A of IT Act
i. The Supreme Court on Tuesday crushed down one of the provisions of the Information Technology Act which gives power to arrest a person for posting offensive contents on web & Social Network.
ii. The Apex Court said that Public’s right to know is directly affected by Section 66A of Information Technology Act.
iii. The Court said that Section 66A clearly affects Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression enshrined under Constitution.
iv. The Apex Court termed the provision as vague and said “what may be offensive to a person, may not be offensive to others”.
v. The Apex Court however, refused to strike down two other provisions of the IT Act that provide blocking of sites.
Note: The first PIL on the issue was filed in 2012 by a law student, who sought amendment in Section 66A of the Act, after two girls were arrested in Palghar in Thane district in Maharashtra as one of them posted a comment against the shutdown in Mumbai following Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray’s death and the other liked it.
3. World Tuberculosis Day is being observed today
i. World Tuberculosis Day is observed every year on 24th March.
ii. The day is observed to create awareness on the global epidemic and on efforts to eliminate the disease.
iii. The day is an opportunity to educate the general public about the prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis.
iv. In a message to the people on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, President Pranab Mukherjee urged all Indians to work together to bring an end to the scourge of Tuberculosis within the country.
4. Shashi Kapoor selected for Dadasaheb Phalke Award
i. Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor has been selected for Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2014.
ii. He will be the 46th recipient of the award. The award was honoured for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.
iii. The actor has acted in memorable films like “Deewar”, “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”, “Trishul” and “Kabhi Kabhie”.
iv. This will be third Phalke award in Kapoor family after Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor being the other recipients.
v. He started acting in films as a child in the late 1940s. His best known performances as child artist were in “Aag” (1948) and “Awaara” (1951), where he played the younger version of the character played by his elder brother Raj Kapoor.
vi. He was one of India’s first actors to go international. He is known internationally for starring in many British and American films, notably Merchant Ivory Proudctions run by Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, such as “The Householder” (1963), “Shakespeare Wallah” (1965), “Bombay Talkie” (1970) and “Heat and Dust”(1982).
5. Sunil Ambwani sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC
i. Justice Sunil Ambwani today took oath as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court at Raj Bhawan in Jaipur.
ii. He was the acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
iii. Governor Kalyan Singh administered the oath to Justice Ambwani.
6. ADB projects India’s growth rate to 7.8% in 2015-16
i. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) projected India’s growth rate to 7.8 per cent in 2015-16.
ii. It also forecast in 2016-17, India’s growth rate would be 8.2 percent.
iii. The Asian Development Outlook, an annual publication of the ADB said, India’s growth and investor confidence will improve on the back of government’s structural reform agenda and improved external demand.
iv. The ADB projected China economic growth to decelerate from 7.4 per cent in current fiscal to 7.2 percent next fiscal and 7 per cent in 2016-17.
7. Amitav Ghosh shortlisted for International Booker prize
i. Amitav Ghosh shortlisted among 10 finalists for this year’s Man Booker International Prize.
ii. He was
shortlisted for his contribution to the English language writing.
iii. Earlier he
missed the Brooker Prize in 2008 when he was shortlisted for is work “Sea of
Poppies”.
iv. The prize
is awarded every two years to a living author who has published fiction either
originally in English or whose work is generally available in translation in
the English language.
