1. Centre allocates Rs.410 cr. to minimise impact of deficit monsoon
(i) With a view to reduce the negative effects of deficit monsoon, the Union government has allocated Rs.410 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) to 20 states and Union Territories this year.
(ii) Ministry of Agriculture has observed that in the past few years 219 districts in the country have been frequently affected by drought.
(iii) Realising the gravity of situation, the Centre has identified the most vulnerable areas that require immediate attention for water conservation, harvesting and ground water recharge.
2. RBI declares SBI, ICICI as Domestic Systemically Important Banks
(i) On September 1, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declared State Bank of India (SBI) and Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs).
(ii) Every year in the month of August, as per the D-SIB framework, RBI is expected to disclose name of banks selected as D-SIB’s.
(iii) These banks are thus identified as ‘too-big-to-fail’ and for the welfare of India’s economy, the central bank would take every possible measure to prevent their downfall.
3. SAHAJ scheme for online release of new LPG connections
(i) In another boost to the government’s Digital India campaign, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry on August 31 launched SAHAJ. It is an online LPG service, which will help consumers avoid hassles in getting new connections. It was launched in Delhi.
(iii) The new system will be available on the government’s LPG portal-PAHAL and every oil company’s website.
4. North America’s tallest peak Mt. McKinley renamed Denali
(i) President Barack Obama approved the long pending demand of native Americans to rename Mount McKinley, the highest mountain peak in North America, as Denali.
(ii) The White House statement said, “This designation recognises the sacred status of Denali to generations of Alaska’s natives.”
5. Ratan Tata invests in Infinite Analytics
(i) Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons Ratan Tata invested an undisclosed sum in a big data analytics start-up Infinite Analytics.
(ii) The start-up mainly helps customers including e-commerce company
eBay, Croma Retail, and others such as Air BnB rake through reams of data and highlight hidden
insights, patterns and unknown correlations.
6. Mare Dibaba first Ethiopian woman to win gold in marathon at IAAF World Championships
(i) On 30th August 2015, Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba won laurels for Ethiopia by becoming the first woman
to have won the gold in women’s marathon in the 2015 IAAF World Championships.
(ii) Dibaba beat
Kenya’s Helah Kiprop and Bahrain’s Eunice Kirwa, who claimed silver and bronze respectively.
7. India wins Test series against Sri Lanka
(i) India won the three-match cricket Test series against Sri Lanka 2-1 on September 1st, 2015. In the final match India defeated Sri Lanka with an impressive 117-run win over.
(ii) India clinched their first Test series victory against Sri Lanka on Sri Lankan soil after 22 years. However, it was Sri Lanka’s second home series defeat in a row, having earlier lost 1-2 to Pakistan.
