1. Nepal adopts a democratic constitution
(i) On Sunday, Nepal adopted a democratic constitution after years of deliberation.
(ii) Some of the highlights of the constitution are – It is the first in Asia to specifically protect the rights of LGBT community. Further, the state and judiciary are prohibited from discriminating against sexual and gender minorities.
(iii) Despite certain sections’ demand to declare Nepal a Hindu country, the constitution defines Nepal as a secular country. Proselytising is illegal under the new constitution as incidents of marginalised and lower caste Hindus converting to Christianity remains high.
(iv) The constitution has been criticised by some section of people for discriminating against women as it has separate, unequal provisions for men and women in passing on citizenship. It is also criticised for not being truly secular as the constitution goes to define secularism as the “protection of Sanatan religion culture, as well as cultural and religious freedom”.
2. Japan passes contentious security bills
(i) Japan’s parliament has passed a bill which may soon lead to Japanese troops fighting abroad for the first time in 70 years.
(ii) Though this bill was welcomed by Japan’s ally – the US, the legislation has ignited massive protests across the nation. From ordinary citizens to the privileged, people have asserted that it violates the pacifist constitution and would involve Japan in US-led conflicts nearly 70 years after the post-war peace.
3. Metro Man E Sreedharan in UN’s High Level Advisory Group
(i) E Sreedharan, associated with Delhi Metro and known as India’s Metro Man as he was the Principal Advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, has been invited by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to serve on the High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport (HLAG-ST).
(ii) As per reports, Sreedharan has accepted the offer and will serve in the advisory group for three years.
4. Cabinet approves Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission
(i)
On September 19, the Union Cabinet approved the
Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission to drive social and economic advancement in
rural areas.
(ii)
With an outlay of Rs 5142.08 crore, the Rurban Mission will develop clusters of smart villages that have a potential for holistic growth. The clusters would be developed by encouraging economic activities, local entrepreneurship and
creation of infrastructure.
(iii) The government would set up 300 such clusters across
India by 2019-20.
5. Jagmohan Dalmiya passes away
(i) The President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jagmohan Dalmiya, 75, passed away in Kolkata, on Sunday.
(ii) Dalmiya had been complaining of chest pain a few days before and following a heart attack on Thursday, he underwent angiography.
(iii) He was a known workaholic and was an influential cricket administrator of the world’s most powerful cricket association.
6. Mariko Kipchumba wins 2015 Beijing International Marathon
(i) On Sunday, Mariko Kiplagat Kipchumba ,41-year-old Kenyan runner won the 35th edition of Beijing International Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.
(ii) His victory broke the Ethiopian winning streak which had claimed all the three consecutive titles previously.
(iii) He clocked 2:11:00 to reach the finish line first.
