i. South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets and
enters into the semi – final of 2015 ICC World Cup.
ii. Jean-Paul Duminy bagged the second hat-trick
of this tournament after England bowler Steven Finn took the first hat-trick against
Australia.
iii. South African bowlers manage to all out Sri
Lankan team for 133 runs in 37.2 overs.
iv. South Africa lose one wicket and chased the
target in just 18 overs and register their first-ever knockout win in the
50-over showpiece event.

2. US embassy
shut down Saudi Arabia closed indefinitely
i. The US embassy in Saudi Arabia will remain
closed until further noticed due to heightened security concerns at US
diplomatic facilities, the embassy said on its website on Wednesday.
ii. The embassy first announced the US embassy
and consulates have cancelled all consular services in Riyadh, Jeddah and
Dhahran for Sunday on March 15 and 16.
iii. According to
the statement, the State Department has urged US citizens to carefully consider
the risks of travelling to Saudi Arabia and limit non-essential travel within
the country.
3. Netanyahu’s
Likud wins Israeli election
i. In a
dramatic victory against all odds, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today
secured a stunning win in Israel’s closely-fought general election.
ii. Likud appeared
to have earned 30 out of parliament’s 120 seats and was in a position to be
able to build a coalition government with its right-wing and religious allies
with relative ease.
iii. Mr. Netanyahu’s
return to power for a fourth term and set
to become the country’s longest-serving premier.
4. Sohail Aman appointed new
Air force chief of Pakistan
i. Air Marshal Sohail Aman has been appointed the new Chief of Air Staff of
Pakistan.
ii. He will replace Tahir Rafique.
iii. Air Marshal Sohail Aman was
commissioned in Pakistan Air Force in November 1980 as GD Pilot.
iv. He is a graduate of Combat Commanders’ School, Air War College and Kings
College, London.
5. Supreme
Court rejects reservation to jats under OBC quota
i. Supreme Court rejects the notification of
UPA government which included reservation to Jats under OBSC quota in nine states
of India.
ii. The court scrapped the March 2014 notification that
included Jats from nine states – Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand – in the
central OBC list, saying the decision was based on “outdated data” and amounted
to “retrograde governance”.
iii. A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and
Rohinton F Nariman said that though caste may be a prominent and distinguishing
factor for easy determination of backwardness, it cannot be the sole criterion.
6. UN
World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction concluded in Japan
i. The Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction
(WCDRR) was concluded in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
ii. The conference reviewed the implementation of the
Hyogo Framework for Action (2005 – 15) and adopted a Post-2015 framework for
disaster risk reduction.
iii. The objective of the conference is to consider the
experience gained through the regional and national strategies/institutions and
plans for disaster risk reduction and their recommendations as well as relevant
regional agreements within the implementation of the Hyogo Framework of Action.
Note: India will
host the seventh Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction
(AMCDRR) in 2016. This was announced by Home Minister of India Rajnath Singh at
the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai, Japan.
