1. 
India ranks below among neighbouring countries in broadband reach: TRAI

i. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI); India is ranked below Bhutan and Sri Lanka in terms of broadband penetration.

ii. “India ranks 125th in the world for fixed broadband penetration. Some of our neighbours like Bhutan and Sri Lanka are ahead of us.

iii. We need to seriously think about it,” TRAI Chairman Rahul Khullar said while sharing details of recommendations on the subject of ‘Delivering Broadband Quickly’

iv. In the wireless or mobile broadband segment, India is ranked at 113th with a penetration of 3.2 per 100 inhabitants.

2. Vishal Sikka named University Advisory Professor at China University

i. Vishal Sikka has been appointed as Advisory Professor at “The East China Normal University (ECNU), one of the most prestigious universities in China.

ii.  “ECNU is a prestigious Chinese university. It is a great honour to receive this recognition, and I accept it with deep gratitude. It reinforces my desire to be a lifelong teacher and a lifelong student.

3. Jamal Benomar, UN Peace Envoy to Yemen Resigns

i. Jamal Benomar, UN Peace Envoy to Yemen resigned from his post, after losing support from Gulf countries for his mission in the conflict-riven nation.

ii. Since 2012, he was serving as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s special envoy for Yemen. He joined UN in 1994 and had served at various key of posts of different UN agencies.

iii. It included United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA).

4. Satya Nadella awarded with the White House Champions of Change

i. Microsoft’s Indian-origin CEO Satya Nadella was awarded with the White House Champions of Change.

ii. He is one of the 12 local Champions of Change who were honoured for their exemplary leadership.

iii. Champions of Change honour is given to those who support working families and help make change in their companies or communities.

5. Stanislav Gross, Former Czech Republic Prime Minister passed away

i. Former Czech Republic Prime Minister Stanislav Gross passed away after a long illness. He was 45.

ii. He was the youngest Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2004 to 2005 at the age of 34.

6. Ashish Jakhar sets national record in hammer throw

i. Ashish Jakhar of Haryana set a national youth record in boys’ hammer throw on the second day of the 12th National Youth Athletics Championships

ii. He hurled the 5kg ball-and-chain to a new distance of 71.92m on his opening throw and went on to improve it further to 72.04m to stamp his class with fine rotations on the circle to set the first national record of the meet.

iii. The previous national record had stood in the name of Haryana’s Sukhdev Singh (70.35m) since 2009.

iv. Only Chinese thrower Xu Wenjie has a better mark than Ashish in the Asian rankings, with a 72.35m throw, so far this season.
