1. Syrian refugee crisis – Germany to introduce temporary controls on border
(i) Germany is considering to introduce temporary controls on the border it shares with Austria to deal with the exodus of migrants from Syria.
(ii) Interior Minister of Germany said, “Refugees could “not choose” their host countries and called on other EU states to do more. Germany expects 800,000 migrants to arrive this year.”
(iii) The whole of Europe is struggling to accommodate the huge influx of refugees fleeing not just from Syria but even Afghanistan, Eritrea and other countries.
2. Hindi Diwas observed on September 14
(i) On September 14th, Hindi Diwas was observed across India to promote the importance of the national language within and outside of India.
(ii) On this day, President Pranab Mukherjee presented Rajbhasha Awards 2014-15 across categories in New Delhi.
(iii) The Rajbhasha awards are given to acknowledge excellent contribution of ministries, departments and nationalised banks, etc to encourage Hindi.
3. Gujarat most investor friendly state in India- World Bank report
(i) Gujarat tops the World Bank’s first ever ranking of states on the ease of
conducting business in India.
(ii) States were evaluated based on the execution of a
98-point reforms agenda over a six-month period – from January to June.
(iii) Gujarat
implemented 71.14 percent of the reforms. Andhra Pradesh came second with a
score of 70.12 percent while Jharkhand was third with 63.09 per cent.
(iv) The rankings reflect the ease of doing business by small and medium enterprises and not foreign investors.
4. World’s longest chain of continental volcanoes found in Australia
(i) The World’s longest chain of volcanoes formed over the past 33 million years and stretching over 2,000 kms has been found in Eastern Australia recently.
(ii) This volcanic range runs from Cape Hillsborough on the central Queensland coast, south-west through central New South Wales to Cosgrove in Victoria. This track has been named as the Cosgrove hotspot track.
(iii) The lead author of the study Rhodri Davies said, “This volcanic chain was created over the past 33 million years, as Australia moved north-northeast over a mantle plume hotspot which we believe is now located in Bass Strait.”
5. Dr. G Satheesh Reddy conferred with the Royal Aeronautical Society’s silver medal
(i) In September 2015, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister Dr G Satheesh Reddy was
conferred with the Royal Aeronautical Society’s (RAeS) prestigious silver medal in London,
UK.
(ii) Dr. Reddy is the only Indian Defence Scientist to have received this honour.
(iii) This international honour was bestowed on Dr Reddy in acknowledgement of his
contributions to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as one of
the leading navigation and avionics experts.
6. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis win the 2015 US Open women’s doubles title
(i) On September 13, 2015, the Indo-Swiss duo Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won
the 2015 US Open women’s doubles title.
(ii) The pair defeated Casey Dellacqua (Australia) and Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) 6-3 6-3 in the finale held in New York.
(iii) It was their second consecutive Grand Slam title after the Wimbledon in July
2015.
7. Narsingh Yadav bags a bronze at the World Wrestling Championship
(i) Indian boxer Narsingh Pancham Yadav secured his place in the 2016 Rio Olympics
after bagging a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championship in the men’s
74kg freestyle category on September 14, 2015.
(ii) Narsingh became the only Indian
to have won a medal at this championship.
8. Yuki Bhambri wins the 2015 Shanghai ATP Challenger title
(i) India’s Yuki Bhambri, recently bagged the 2015 ATP Challenger title at Shanghai. He
defeated Di Wu of China 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(3) to claim the $50,000 title.
(ii) He defeated Di Wu of China 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(3) to claim the title worth $50,000.
(iii) The 80 ATP
points that he gained after winning this title is expected to help Bhambri up his
world ranking from the current 145th rank.
