1. Iran to clinch nuclear deal with six world powers

(i) Recently, Iran’s parliament passed a bill backing a nuclear deal with six world powers, namely the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany. 

(ii) Officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal was passed with 161 votes in favour, 59 against and 13 abstentions.

(iii) It will lift economic sanctions on Iran while the latter has promised to curb its atomic activities.

2. Economist  Angus Deaton wins the 2015 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences

(i) On October 12, Angus Deaton, an economist and a professor at Princeton University, won the 2015 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Prof. Deaton devoted his career to carry out research that would shape public policy in areas of savings and consumption, poverty, wealth, health and happiness. 

(ii) While announcing the prize, the Royal Swedish Academy said, “To design economic policy that promotes welfare and reduces poverty, we must first understand individual consumption choices… More than anyone else, Angus Deaton has enhanced this understanding.”

3. Supreme Court imposes Environment Compensation Charge on vehicles entering Delhi

(i) In a recent development, the Supreme Court imposed the ‘Environment Compensation Charge’ of Rs.700 and Rs.1300 on commercial vehicles entering Delhi. 

(ii) The charge will be collected for four months starting November. The money collected by toll officers will be utilised by the Delhi government to make the city’s air cleaner. 

(iii) However, the bench stated that passenger buses, ambulances and vehicles carrying essential commodities, would be exempted from paying the charge.

4. Bank of Baroda appoints P S Jayakumar as new MD and CEO 

(i) P S Jayakumar, former head of VBHC Value Homes, took over as the MD and CEO of Bank of Baroda (BoB), which is India’s second largest public lender by assets.

(ii) The appointment has come when the bank is being investigated for the alleged fraud and black money transactions worth over Rs.6000 crore. 

(iii) The amount was transferred from one of BoB’s New Delhi branches to Hong Kong as payment for non-existent imports.

5. Garbine Muguruza and Noval Djokovic win at the 2015 China Open

(i) On October 11, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza won the women’s singles title at the 2015 China Open by defeating Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-4. This is the 22-year-old’s second and biggest title.

(ii) In the men’s singles category, Serbian top seed Novak Djokovic won the 2015 China Open by defeating Spaniard Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-2. 

(iii) This victory makes Djokovic the only tennis player to have won the title six times. This is his eighth title of the year.

6. Ajay Jayaram wins the men’s singles title at the 2015 Dutch Open

(i) On October 11, Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram won the 2015 Dutch Open Grand Prix Badminton tournament and retained his men’s singles title by defeating Estonian player Raul Must. 

(ii) Jayaram defeated 12th seed and World No.48 Must 21-12, 21-18 in the 34-minute final match. 

(iii) This is Jayaram’s second title.

7. Lewis Hamilton wins the 2015 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix title

(i) Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (Britain) won the F1 Russian Grand Prix, held in Sochi, Russia. 

(ii) Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel (Germany) and Sergio Perez (Mexico) of Force India finished second and third respectively. 

(iii) This is Hamilton’s ninth title of the season.
