1. Bhupendra Yadav to head panel on GST
i. The government has agreed to Congress demand for forming a select committee of the Rajya Sabha on the Goods and Services Tax, GST bill.
ii. The panel comprise of 21 – member and will be headed by BJP member Bhupendra Yadav.
iii. The GST bill was approved by Lok Sabha on Wednesday last after a walkout by Congress.
iv. While the government was keen that GST is approved as early as possible, it wanted to do it with the widest-possible consensus without appearing confrontatationist.
v. GST was first mooted 12 years ago but couldn’t be approved as states feared curbs on their fiscal powers.
2. Justice Cyriac Joseph appointed interim Chairperson of NHRC
i. Justice Cyriac Joseph appointed as the interim Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) by the President Pranab Mukherjee .
ii. Former NHRC chairperson KG Balakrishnan had completed his tenure on Monday. He was the sixth NHRC chairman and the longest serving one.
iii. Now until the appointment of a new chairperson, Justice Cyriac Joseph will be act as an interim chairperson of NHRC.
3. Indo-Global Pharma Expo to be held in Hyderabad
i. -Global Pharma Expo and Summit 2015 is scheduled to be held in Hyderabad on 24 July 2015.
ii. The theme of Indo-Global Pharma Expo and Summit 2015 will be Innovation and Advances.
iii. The event will deliberate on a range of issues, from pharmaceutical technology to education, indigenous drugs and drug regulatory affairs, besides serving as a platform for joint ventures and project collaboration.
4. Nikesh Arora named new President of Japan’s SoftBank Corp.
i. Indian-born Nikesh Arora named as the President of Japan’s multinational telecommunications and internet company SoftBank Corp. He succeeds Masayoshi Son.
ii. Earlier, he was the Vice Chairman of the company and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SB Group US, Inc. (former SoftBank Internet and Media, Inc.) since September 2014.
5. Aslov Sirojidin, Tajikistan Foreign Minister arrives India
i. Tajikistan Foreign Minister Aslov Sirojidin Muhridinovich arrived India on a five-day visit.
ii. During his visit, he will hold talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
iii. The visit by the Tajikistan leader comes with in days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi making it clear that India was ready to join a Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan Trade and Transit Agreement as the fourth partner.
6. BRICS U-17 football tournament will be held in India
i. BRICS Under – 17 football tournament to be held in India in 2016.
ii. According to the apex industry body ASSOCHAM, a memorandum of understanding is set to be signed tomorrow with Brazilian representatives in New Delhi.
iii. BRICS nation includes – Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa.
7. Hollande becomes first
French president to visit Cuba
i. Francois
Hollande is the first
French president to visit Cuba since 1898, and the first Western head of state
on the island since its thaw with Washington.
ii. He met Cuban
revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on a historic trip to Havana.
iii. The French president also met his current Cuban counterpart, Fidel
Castro’s brother and successor Raul.
