1. Sania Mirza ranked World no. 1 in doubles
i. Sania Mirza has
become first Indian woman to achieve World no 1 rank in doubles category in
Tennis.
ii. She has created
history by becoming the first female tennis player from India
iii. To achieve the
world number one rank in doubles, following her stupendous title win at the WTA
Family Circle Cup with partner Martina Hingis, at Charleston in the United
States.
iv. In the lop-sided
final of the clay court event yesterday, the top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair blew
away the challenge of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak 6-0, 6-4 in just 57
minutes.
v. Sania is also first female player from the country to win Grand Slam
tournaments.
2. IDBI Bank
and LIC join hands to offer life cover to account holders
i. IDBI Bank
and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has joined hands have to
implement the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJBY) for savings bank
account holders of the bank.
ii. PMJBY was
announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a societal issue through a
social security system,” the bank said in a statement.
iii. PMJBY, a
life insurance scheme, is one of the three schemes announced by the Government
in the Budget for 2015-16.
iv. The scheme
offers life insurance cover of Rs. 2 lakh to the bank accountholders
in the age group of 18-50 years at an annual premium of Rs. 330 plus
service tax. The insurance cover will be available up to 55 years.
3. India’s first International Financial
Services Centre opened in Gujarat
i. India’s first
International Financial Services Centre, IFSC, has became operational at GIFT
City in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
ii. Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley unveiled the rules and regulations for this global financial hub
at a special ceremony organized at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
iii. IFSC rules allow
companies incorporated outside India to raise money in foreign currencies by
issuance and listing of their equity shares on stock exchanges within the IFSC,
where individual and institutional investors from India and abroad including
NRIs, would be allowed to trade.
4. Morgan Stanley forecast India’s economy to
grow at 7.9% for current fiscal
i. Multinational
financial services corporation Morgan Stanley, said India’s economy will grow
at 7.9 per cent this fiscal and 8.4 per cent in Financial Year 2016-17.
ii. In a note Morgan
Stanley stated that the risk to India’s growth forecasts are evenly balanced
and government’s determined efforts to implement policy actions, reviving
productive investment and cutting back less effective policies, are helping the
economy move towards the path of faster growth and lower inflation.
5. Nobel laureate Guenter Grass passes away
i. German Nobel
laureate Guenter Grass passed away. He was 87.
ii. Grass made his
literary reputation with “The Tin Drum,” published in 1959.
iii. Three decades after its release, in 1999, the Swedish Academy
honored Grass with the Nobel Prize for literature, praising him for setting out
to revive German literature after the Nazi era.
6. BHEL commissions 600 MW thermal unit in Chhattisgarh
i. State-owned power
equipment-maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)has commissioned a
second 600 MW thermal unit in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir Champa District for the
Dainik Bhaskar Power Limited.
ii. “This is the second unit
of this power project, commissioned by BHEL. The first 600 MW unit was
commissioned in 2014.
7. New Zealand
won Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men’s hockey tournament
i. New Zealand
has won the 2015 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men’s hockey tournament.
ii. New Zealand
defeated World Champions Australia by 3-1 in the final played at the Sultan
Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia.
iii. New Zealand
won the title for only the second time since the inception of Sultan Azlan Shah
Cup competition in 1983.
iv. New
Zealand’s first victory came in 2012 against Argentina.
8. Jitu Rai won
Bronze ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup
i. Indian
shooter Jitu Rai has won the Bronze medal at the 10-meter Air Pistol Men final
in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rifle/Pistol World Cup
held in Changwon, South Korea.
ii. The Gold
medal of the event was won by Jin Jongoh of South Korea and
Silver medal was won by Nuang Ye Tun of Myanmar.
iii. Jin Jongoh
is five-time Olympic medallist and the reigning World Champion.
9. Sania &
Hingis won WTA Family Circle Cup
i. Sania
Mirza and Martina Hingis, has won the 731000 US dollar WTA Family Circle Cup
doubles title.
ii. Both defeated Australian-Croatian pair of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak by 6-0,
6-iii. Earlier, they won the Miami
Open Tennis women’s doubles title on 5 April 2015 and Indian Wells Open title
on 21 March 2015.
10. Yuki Bhambri
won F1 Futures Singles Title
i. Yuki
Bhambri won the Uzbekistan F1 Futures Men’s singles title by defeating Dzmitry
Zyrmont of Serbia.
ii. Yuki defeated his rival in two
straight sets 6-2 6-4 in the final match held in Karshi, Uzbekistan.
