1. Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli elected as Prime Minister of Nepal
(i) On October 11, Nepal’s Parliament elected Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli as Nepal’s 38th Prime Minister. He is the first under the newly-adopted constitution.
(ii) Oli defeated the incumbent Sushil Koirala after winning 338 votes of the 597 member House and became first PM of the nation since the new constitution was adopted.
(iii) Oli is the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), which is the second largest party in the Nepal’s Parliament.
2. India – China joint military exercise HAND-IN-HAND commences
(i) The joint military training exercise HAND-IN-HAND between India and China will be
carried out from October 12 to October 23, 2015 in China.
(ii) This is the fifth in the hand-in-
hand series, which began in 2007 with the aim of strengthening cooperation between the
forces of the two countries.
(iii) Troops of an Infantry sub-unit and a formation headquarter of
the Indian and Chinese Army have been roped in for the joint exercise.
3. European Union launches Operation Sophia
(i) The European Union (EU) recently launched a new surveillance and rescue operation in the Mediterranean region termed as Operation Sophia.
(ii) Through this operation the EU will
intercept and seize boats suspected of smuggling refugees.
(iii) The goal is to keep in check
attempts of human traffickers and smugglers to exploit the ongoing refugee crisis.
4. Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet wins the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize
(i) On Friday, the Tunisian democracy group known as the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet won the the Nobel Peace Prize for its contribution in promoting a pluralistic democracy in the North African country since the Arab Spring in 2011.
(ii) The Quartet comprises four significant organisations, namely the Tunisian General Labour
Union (UGTT), the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), the
Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers.
5. Whitefly attack destroys cotton crop in North India
(i) In October 2015, two-thirds of the cotton crop in Punjab and Haryana was destroyed
following an attack by whitefly, a common pest.
(ii) The loss is estimated to be Rs.4,200
crore. Cotton yields have fallen drastically and the unrestricted use of pesticides further
worsened the situation, thereby pushing farmers to commit suicide.
(iii) Punjab and Haryana
governments have set up expert groups to assess the situations and find a solution for
the same.
6. Operation Valsalya launched by Kerala state government
(i) With the view to check the increasing incidents of missing children in the state, the state government of Kerala has launched a programme to trace, rescue and reunite the missing children with the family, titled– Operation Valsalya.
(ii) The state government launched programme is to be implemented along the lines of the much acclaimed ‘Operation Smile’ project in Ghaziabad.
7. Rajasthan govt. launches Jan Awas Yojana
(i) In order to cooperate with the Central government’s plan of providing housing to all by
2022, the Rajasthan government has announced a complimentary scheme called the
Jan Awas Yojana. The project aims to provide housing for
the economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG).
(ii) Launched by the
CM of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje on September 26, the new policy offers incentives to
real estate developers to construct EWS and LIG housing on private and government
land in cities with a population of 1 lakh and above.
8. ICICI Bank launches mVisa mobile payment service
(i) India’s largest private sector bank ICICI Bank recently launched a mobile-payment
solution called ‘mVisa.’
(ii) The app is expected to enable customers pay for services using
their smartphones.
(iii) As per the bank’s statement, customers can use the app to make
electronic payments at physical stores, e-commerce websites, radio taxis and utility bills,
among others.
9. World Post Day observed on October 9
(i) October 9 is observed annually as the World Post Day. This year’s theme being “posts
claim their place in the changing communication landscape”.
(ii) The day marks the
anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in
Switzerland. It was since 1969 that it was marked as World Post Day by the UPU
Congress, held in Japan.
10. Sania Mirza, Martina Hingis win the the women’s doubles title in China Open
(i) On October 10, 2015, top-seeded Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won the WTA China
Open.
(ii) This is their eighth trophy of the season and the fourth consecutive win. The Indo-
Swiss pair defeated Taipei girls Hao Ching Chan and Yung – Jan Chan 6-7(9), 6-1, 10-8
in the final.
