If we have to change this state of affairs, we need to act as ‘Inspired Leaders’. Leaders who truly care for the wellbeing of all stake holders and secure the future of our children. This requires the adoption of ‘Sustainability’ as a core value of our organizations and a ‘shared vision’ that emphasises this dimension.
In designing organization structures, we may create full time teams to work on technologies, processes and systems for driving sustainability in all our operations.
In addition, we may have steering committees, councils and other such forums that plan and lead this work. In defining roles and goals for people, we give importance to initiatives that make sustainability a crucial part of our operations and create measures of performance, MIS and review processes that deploy these. We build capability of our people that make this way of working real and institute reward and recognition in line with this focus. While hiring new people, we select those who value sustainability and this is done by deploying values assessment tests and training interviewers on ways to assess this dimension.
Finally, we ensure that in all formal and informal communication processes, we regularly communicate the message of this theme and share progress that we are making.
This simple framework from ‘Vision to action’ is adopted by truly inspired leaders who wish to take responsibility for the state of our world.
