Dr. Tarkeshwar Kumar, director of National Institute of
Technology, Durgapur (NITD) resigned on Monday, November 30 2015. A committee
has been formed since to decide on the action to be taken on the alleged
mismanagement under Dr. Kumar at NITD.
Dr. Kumar resigned after continuous protests by the students in
the aftermath of a student’s death on campus. Prosenjit Sarkar, a fourth year
student, died allegedly due to medical negligence on part of the doctors at the
Medical unit (MU).
The committee will comprise of college administration and Sagar
Bhartia, Rohit Yadav and Eslavath Deevakiran Naik as representatives of the Students’
Gymkhana. It will discuss the issue of the compensation to be paid to Prosenjit’s
father,Mr. Parimal Sarkar, and the share of contribution to be made by students
and NITD respectively. It will also look into the doubts and allegations raised
by students related to recruitment drives conducted in the institute since
2006.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ashoke Dey director of NIT Patna has been asked
to hold additional charge as Director of NITD till a new director is appointed.
