The UPSC conducts the Combined Medical Services Examination in order to recruit Medical graduates for various services/ posts such as Assistant Divisional Medical Officers in the Railways, Junior Scale posts in Indian Ordnance Factories, Junior Scale posts in Central Health Services, Medical Officers in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and General Duty Medical Officers in NDMC. Let us look at some critical details of this important exam.

Minimum educational qualification required:

(a) Candidates who have passed the written and practical parts of their final M.B.B.S. exam are eligible for the Combined Medical Services Examination.

(b) Candidates appearing for the final year MBBS Examination are also eligible to apply. 

(c) A candidate who has yet to complete the compulsory rotating internship is eligible to appear for the examination. But, if selected, such candidates would be appointed only after they complete their compulsory rotating internship.

Age limit:

Candidates for this exam must not have attained 32 years of age as on 01st January of the year in which the exam is conducted.

The upper age limit is relaxable by three years and five years for candidates belonging to OBC and SC/ST categories respectively.

Scheme of examination:

This examination is conducted (as of the Combined Medical Services Examination 2014 Notification) in two stages:

Stage I – Written Examination

Stage II – Personality Test

The written examination consists of Paper I and Paper II, both of which are objective type papers. The details of these two papers are as follows:

a) Paper I – General Ability, General Medicine, Paediatric – 2 hours, 250 marks

b) Paper II – Surgery; Gynaecology and Obstetrics; Preventive and Social Medicine – 2 hours, 250 marks

There is a penalty for wrong answers marked by the candidate. For every wrong answer, one third (0.33) of the marks assigned to the question will be deducted.

Candidates who qualify in the written examination would be called for the Interview/ Personality test by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The Interview/ Personality test carries 100 Marks.
