Cognizant was largest recruiter at IIM Bangalore in 2010, salary confidential: RTI reply

As per data provided by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore in an answer to a Right to Information (RTI) application, Cognizant Technology Services recruited 11 students from the PGP class of 2010, making it the company recruiting the largest number of students this year at IIM Bangalore.

In an RTI reply ((IIM Bangalore/RTI/19, June 12, 2010) to an application filed by a Mumbai-based citizen who did not wish to be named, IIM Bangalore has provided a list of 268 student names from the PGP 2010 batch and the companies they were hired by. The list consists of accepted offers.

To a question in the RTI application “What is the average value of the salaries of jobs offered to 2008-10 PGP batch as per the latest data”, IIM Bangalore replied, “None of the data regarding compensation / salary is available with IIM Bangalore since salary figures are confidential between the employer and the student (employee) and companies do not release salary figures to the institute. As an institution, we have stopped giving out figures that are speculative in nature.”

By deeming the salary figures as confidential between the student and the employer, the institute has effectively blocked all democratic recourse to knowing the compensation trends at IIMB placements — information that the rest of the IIMs (except Lucknow) and other government-owned b-schools regularly report.

To another question, “In all, how many students … were not able to secure a job offer during the institute’s placement process?”, IIM Bangalore vaguely replied, “IIMB provided placement assistance to all the graduating students who sought placement and all those students received a job offer.”

Interestingly, the summer placement report for the same batch on the IIM Bangalore website reports the batch size at 270 whereas the RTI reply only accounts for 268 students.

Below is the list of companies and the number of offers they made according to the RTI reply, reproduced with the permission of the applicant who filed the RTI. The reply also cites that seven students opted out of the placements, five deferred their placements to another year while one student was “not part of Final Placements 2010.”
