In a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, yesterday, May 25 2016, approval for conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 was approved. This decision brings to an end a long standing demand of students and faculty of ISM.
The Amendment to The Institutes of
Technology Act, 1961 has also paved the way for inclusion of six new IITs at
Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwar (Karnataka), Bhilai
(Chhattisgarh), Goa and Jammu (J&K) as IITs, subject to the Parliament’s approval.
The approval will bring the six new
Indian Institutes of Technology within the ambit of The Institutes of
Technology Act, 1961. They will now be recognized as institutions of national
importance, including ISM, Dhanbad. The total number of IITs now stands at 23, including ISM and six new IITs.
Approval for setting up a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Andhra Pradesh was also granted in the same meeting. The NIT will come up in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. NIT Warangal will be the mentor institute.
