The Indian Armed Forces mainly consists of three Military forces namely, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force.
The President of India is the Supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
With an active manpower of 1.3 million, the Indian Armed force ranks third largest in the world.
India also has 1.1 million reserve personnel in the Armed forces, which is the largest in the world.
The Armed Forces have four main tasks.
- To assert the territorial integrity of India.
- To defend the country if attacked by a foreign nation.
- To support the civil community in case of disasters (e.g. flooding).
- To participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations in consonance with India’s commitment to the United Nations Charter.
