Introduction:
Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) is a public university offering undergraduate, Post-graduate and research programmes in humanities and social sciences with a campus-based unitary structure. The university was recognized by the Government of the NCT of Delhi through an act of the 2007 state legislature. The University is named after Dr B.R. Ambedkar who believed in education as the right weapon to slash the social slavery which will enlighten the downtrodden masses to come up and gain economic betterment, social status, and political freedom.
Public Policy and Social Entrepreneurship:
Based on numerous rounds of consultative meetings commenced by AUD, in which professionals from the field of education, other thinkers, NGO, and experts took part. The university determined to form a school that will offer degree programmes and endorses research in the area of management and business. Even though a huge number of institutions offer MBA programmes in and around Delhi, it was believed that there still subsisted room for providing good quality education in the area of management and business. Simultaneously, it was also decided that AUD must not just imitate the already available model but should build up to something inimitable that can fill up space which exists in the field of research and management education in India and more explicitly in the NCT region.
It was hence thought appropriate that the programmes of the school proposed must imitate the larger philosophy of AUD which beliefs in superiority with social justice and equality. Whereas business and profit are significant for the economy, it is also equally significant that business and profit are sited within the larger framework of our society. Being aware of the condemnation which has surfaced against business management education in the current period it was crucial that AUD must take on itself in promoting research and training in business within the larger context of public policy on the one hand while spotlighting on the most gifted field of social entrepreneurship on the other.
It was regarded as the most favourable time to develop a school which will address issues of the three interlinked areas, that is, public policy, business, and social entrepreneurship in an integrated and holistic manner. The school was, therefore, named the School of Business, Public Policy and Social Entrepreneurship (SBPPSE) which will employ in research and teaching. It offers three-degree programmes namely Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Masters in Public Policy (MPP) and Masters in Social Entrepreneurship (MSE). It was thus curtained that AUD will assemble resources to begin the 2-year full-time MBA programme in July 2012, while the other two programmes will be commenced within the next 3 – 5 years.
SBPPSE has signed MoUs with Northampton University, the UK and San Francisco State University, California, USA which will make available significant occasions for student and faculty exchanges and other collaborative work between the AUD and the two institutions.
