If you are keen on pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering, then Telangana is the place to be, as around 173 engineering colleges will soon offer customised courses in this new field. The state information technology department recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Singapore-based Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) to design a curriculum for the course. Further, the university will also facilitate instructional design for creating and assessing training and education programmes to students, training to faculty members and counselling to students willing to pursue career in this field. “The aim is to create more employment among students in this field,” said Sujiv Nair, chief executive officer, TASK.
The Singapore-based University is a major research centre in aeronautical engineering as it that has collaborated with several companies in the aerospace industry. The purpose of having a new curriculum in this field is to revamp three domains of study – manufacturing, operations and maintenance.
Aeronautical Engineering is an upcoming field which deals with development of aircraft and space craft by applying principles of science and technology. A degree in this field opens employment opportunities in various companies dealing with research, design, manufacture and maintenance of highly sophisticated products such as aircraft, missiles and space satellites.
Although there are few colleges offering this course, experts believe that this tie-up with the will only enhance the growth of aeronautical industry in the state. “Most of the colleges continue to focus on other segments such as civil, electronics and mechanical engineering. This new curriculum will boost the aerospace industry in the state by giving more exposure and options to students,” said N V Swamy Naidu, head of department, aerospace engineering at Gitam University. Gitam University recently rechristened the Department of Aeronautical Engineering established in 2011 as Aerospace Engineering from 2015-16 academic year.
Initially, the customised courses developed under the MoU will be made available to students in colleges registered with the TASK i.e. 173 engineering colleges. Later, the government plans to extend the courses to nearly 135 degree colleges in a phased manner.
