Last month, the JEE (Advanced) conducting authorities
released a set of data reports on the final results of the JEE (Advanced) and
its previous avatars, from 2011 onwards. In this set of analysis of these
reports, we will discuss individual elements of the reports and how they are
shaping up for you.
In Part 4, we look at the source where the 9,974 students
came from to join the IITs.
In the JEE (Advanced) form, students had a choice to mention
whether they had taken up coaching for JEE or not. Nearly 51% students
mentioned that they had taken up some sort of coaching, while 49% students said
that they had opted for self-study.
Since mentioning this choice was optional to the students,
and is independently unverifiable, it is probable that the figures that the
IITs have released are vastly different from the truth. Students may not want
to reveal whether they took up coaching or not, if they felt that revealing
this point would adversely affect their chances of getting into an IIT.
In other, verifiable data, we look at which state/national
boards did these students appear for their 12th Exams from.
The bulk of these students took the exams under the CBSE (Central
Board of Secondary Education) – a shade under 60%, 5930 students out of 9974.
Andhra Pradesh comes a distant second with just about 8% of the students
appearing from the Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate
Education before joining the IITs. Maharashtra & Rajasthan are 3rd
& 4th respectively, averaging 6.75% of students between the two boards each.
The students were also listed by the
state from where they were eligible for the JEE (Advanced) – i.e. the state
from where they appeared for the exam.
Location-wise, nearly 1 out of every 5 (1965 out of 9974) students
joining the IITs gave the JEE (Advanced) from Rajasthan. 15% of the remaining 8009
students are from Uttar Pradesh. 8.71% of the total students are from
Maharashtra. Andhra Pradesh & Telangana are the source of about 7.75% of
students each.
That JEE Coaching is a must in these competitive times is a
well-known adage, but as can be seen from the data, seeing states like
Rajasthan (with Kota as a national coaching hub), Andhra Pradesh (Vijaywada being
the hub) and Telangana (Hyderabad) perform quite well in the final tally shows
how integral coaching seems to be for joining an IIT.
