I’ve been interviewing people, or atleast getting interviews scheduled so that I can go ahead and interview people. The trouble is this - after scheduling 60-70% of the people do not show up. Let me back-track and tell you how I generally prepare for interviewing someone.
1) I make sure I have atleast 30 minutes to talk to someone
2) I usually know their resume by rote because hey, something interested me and so I called them up for talking further
3) I am always on time for these interviews because I wouldn’t like to waste anyone’s time.
4) While interviewing I generally give people a fair idea as to what to expect, the general time frames and I follow up personally taking questions and helping people understand what we do.
While I am generally prepared, I find that people who show up are generally unprepared. I think in this month - of 20 people I interviewed, only 2 had checked out our site. I wonder what they came in for discussing with me. Did they want to check out the office? perks? me get down on my knees and begging them to join? Irrespective of that I do spend 30 mins to an hour with everyone who comes over to meet us. I do it for a couple of reasons - firstly I absolutely want to be sure that the person is the right one/wrong one and secondly you need to be fair. Someone came up and took time off their schedule to meet up with you and it would be terribly unfair if this was not reciprocated.
But then, what do I do with the rest of the people who don’t show up - err well, I am creating a monster black list. The list of people we should never hire
I have a feeling I will fill it up with a few hundred million entries before I give up.

Ummm… I hate to tell you this, but if you are looking out for people who can write well, well, it is going to be real hard.
The reasons…
Pagalguy… No not you guys!
Since MBA has become a craze, everyone wants to become one. NO ONE WANTS TO DO AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB! Everyone expects to be paid 15k+, which is not possible. Even call centers start below 15k, most of them. Blame it on the parents, peer pressure, education system…
I think the situation right now is pathetic. Everyone wants a JOB but no one wants to WORK.

Most of the people don’t care what job it is. They just want to get into any organization for a pagar

“I think the situation right now is pathetic. Everyone wants a JOB but no one wants to WORK. ”
Bulls eye!
The current trend is just to throw your CVs in the job cyclones. Someone or the other gets hold of your CV and calls you up. One doesn’t bother the WHs of the job. They are simply interested in getting over with the jobless tag on their head.
Ahhh!

The fact remains…. well accepted…
But now… the tough time begins for such people….
With the Global Crisis starting to hit the country, companies are willing to throw the CVs they have rather than get hold of something…

Well were you talking about your experience in summer placeements or the final one??.. If its the former, then I guess most of us are not having enough knowledge about what a particular company is looking from us (rather: how to sell ourselves to a particular comp) for they have hardly have any paper of true worth in the first 3 months..
But if its the final placement that we are discussing, then its really pitiable… and we can (and should) blame it on the ever increasing demand supply curve where most of the companies are chasing after from which B school you come, rather than what understanding you bring with you…
Don’t know if I struct discordant notes !!!

Abhra,
All the people we are hiring are for full time positions. I am not sure it is just the supply demand curve, I also feel it is a general apathy towards working/work environments.
Hopefully companies can become better places to work and people can be more choosier while being more well informed and willing to work harder
