XAT 2013 on Jan 6: It will be a 2.5 hour exam, more questions on humanities and more exam centres
by Lajwanti D'Souza in XLRI, XAT on 02 August '12

The XLRI School of Business and Human Resources, Jamshedpur which owns and conducts the XAT (Xavier Admission Test) is planning some surprises this year. According to sources at XLRI, while some changes have been finalised, some are still at the discussion stage.

The test will be held on January 6, 2013 and the form notification will be released on August 8, 2012.

One confirmed decision is to continue with the pencil and paper test format this year. Sources told PaGaLGuY that while internal discussions on the XAT paper noted that management aspirants are generally comfortable with computers, some ground for doubt is always there. "There are still people who are not too familiar with computers and we do not want to discriminate at the entry point itself. We will get to the computer format only when we are sure that there is going to be total satisfaction on all fronts," said the source.

Another change almost finalised, is that the main paper will be extended beyond two hours to two and a half hours, not including the essay. Also, a few more questions on humanities and social sciences will make an appearance this year, though the tenor of the paper will be kept 'analytical'.

"This is being done to get in more gender and discipline diversity," added the source.

XLRI said that it was in discussions with other institutes like the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, Xavier Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai, Loyola Institute of Business Administration Chennai and Xavier Institute of Social Studies, Ranchi on the changes in this year's XAT.

Another decision, which is final, is to conduct the exam at more centres. Mangalore and Trichy are definitely on the list and a few others like Kanpur, which were on the list earlier and had been discontinued will come back on the list.

Decisions will also be taken as and when applications start coming in, said the source. "Though 40% of the applications arrive in the last 15 days, we will sieve through the applications, to help us estimate further changes."

    • naga25french Kudos to XL management for persisting with Paper-pencil . They might cut few bamboo trees in the process but will never disappoint the candidate's hope ;)

    • Pankaj.Parasar Balance in number of questions pertaining to humanities area and quantitative ability are much needed to assess the position of the candidate. XAT as a test has more balanced and logical approach. In my opinion, it will continue to do the same in coming years no matter whether it becomes online or stays paper pencil based. I certainly hope in coming days CAT becomes what it used to be.

    • Apurv Every computer test needs to collect psychometric data for a few years before it can go adaptive. The trouble with persisting with paper-pencil is that the XAT is setting itself up for lagging behind the others in creating a quality computer-based test. When the XAT does go computer-based, the CAT would have (hopefully) perfected itself and the XAT will face problems that the CAT faced in the first two computerised years.

    • torqtech Increasing time is a good move!! Standard tests should test candidate's logical ability and not his reflexes.I believe business decisions are inherently long thought out and discussed logically over a period of time and not taken on the spot as it is with "firemen". No harm in introducing diversity in questions as long as there is ample time available to logically ponder over it and crack it. Kudos to XL!

    • ankurkapoor Humanities questions i presume mean more like moral science questions? In that decision making wala section.... hmmm interesting... but i guess that's a much better move 2 increase diversity than straightaway handing over 20 or 30 mks for being 'different' (referring to the new IIMs)... at least gives all a level playin field

    • pratskool @Apurv so we can safely conclude that the 1st 2 years of a computer adaptive test leads to inaccurate results and may lead to wastage of months of hard work done by students??? i am saying this because i feel that many of us including me were a victim of normalisation process
      #47 • 03 Aug '12 Like 3
    • Apurv @pratskool - Some clarification is needed here. The CAT was NOT a computer ADAPTIVE test in the first two years, nor is it that even now. It's merely a fixed-form test delivered on a computer. Having said that, the problems may not necessarily be only in the equalisation process. There could be infrastructural failures, lack of a uniform testing experience across centers and other teething troubles. To XAT's credit, it was the first test to attempt to go computer-based back in 2003 and was cancelled at the last minute because of the same issues. Still, if one says that test delivery will be perfected in India in the coming years, the XAT will still have to waste a few precious years collecting psychometric data in order to be able to go computer-adaptive. The CAT would already have reached there by then, hopefully.

    • cynicall IIMs collecting data at the cost of student's future. They could have learnt something from GMAC, they collected data by providing Integrated Reasoning section and asked the test takers to take it as optional even before this section was launched officially.
