Preparing for the newly introduced General Awareness section in the XAT 2013
by Ravi Handa in XAT, XAT 2013, XLRI Jamshedpur, General Awareness on 12 December '12

What is new about the Xavier's Admission Test 2013? The XAT exam this year will have a General Awareness section, and the paper will have two parts with a total time of 3 hours.

The first part would have to be solved in two hours and 20 minutes and will consist of Quantitative Aptitude (QA), Data Interpretation (DI), Logical Reasoning (LR), Analytical Reasoing (AR), Verbal Ability (VA) and Decision Making (DM).

It is expected that it will have three sections,

    Section 1 – QA & DI

    Section 2 – VA & LR

    Section 3 – AR & DM

You can expect around 85-95 questions in the first part. Let me add that it is quite possible you get a full section on Decision Making, similar to last year.

While most students are comfortable with the first part, they are worried about the second part. It will be of 40 minutes and cover General Awareness & Essay Writing. I would like to help you prepare for the General Awareness section of the XAT 2013.

It is expected that the GK portion will have 20-30 questions. You should not spend more than 15 minutes on it. Believe me, 30 seconds is more than enough time for one GK question.

Questions in general awareness will be from topics such as business, economics and politics related to the business environment. "If you read pink papers such as The Economic Times, Business Standard, Mint, Businessweek, Hindu Business Line, etc, you should be able to answer these questions. You need to have a hold on the current political and economic scenario of the country and the world,” Prof Vishwa Ballabh, admission chairperson, XLRI had said on MBAUniverse.

Taking cue from the above statement, and keeping in mind that little time is left before the exam, here is what I suggest,

If you are planning to go through the entire Manorama Yearbook, don’t even try. It is too herculean a task which would leave you in disarray. Having said that, if you can go through the first few colored pages, that might help.

You should concentrate on the following areas.

    1. Current heads of major Global / Indian companies.

    2. Information on brands and companies as in ‘Dettol is a brand of Reckitt Benckiser’

    3. Taglines of major Global / Indian companies

    4. Major books released in 2011-12, business related books and business biographies.

    5. Current Business Affairs – Major economic decisions, mergers & takeovers, etc.

    6. Terminolgies / Abbreviations – Related to the banking sector, economics & general business.

Here are a few tips that will help,

    • To prepare for these, you can look at some of the lists like Great Places to Work or The Most Trusted Brands. You can then go to the wiki pages of these companies. Do not waste time reading the entire page but just the top i.e. above the index and the sidebar on the right.
    • There are plenty of presentations available for brand taglines on slideshare and you can also check out the Wikipedia page of Advertising Slogans.
    • Go through the bestseller lists on Flipkart & Amazon for recent books of note. You can also search on Google for business books and you will get a sliding window at the top which will help you browse. It is a new feature on Google and is well-timed.
    • Current business affairs is slightly tricky in nature but you can tackle that by searching for major events. One such list which will help you get started is available on Wikipedia – 2012 in India.
    • You can go through this very detailed list of Business & Management terms. It is neither practical nor suggested that you try to mug up this entire list. Do keep in mind that the questions that you will get in the XAT will be objective in nature and you will have to choose an option. What I suggest is that you spend an hour on this page and hopefully that hour will help you eliminate options and fetch a question or two.
    • From the RBI website, you can download a list of abbreviations. Another good list of Finance & Businesss Abbreviations is on Wikipedia.

Some of you might be wondering that ‘Is this enough?’ The answer to that question is – ‘It can never be enough’. General Knowledge as a topic does not have any prescribed syllabus but one can never underestimate the importance of preperation. Also, it is important that your preparation is focused and directed towards a goal.

Imagine that you went fishing in the sea. The fish can be found in any portion of the sea but there will be some areas which would be more densely populated than the others. It would do you good that you fish in those areas. So, from this sea of knowledge, I recommend that you concentrate on the areas that I have listed above because the probability of catching a question in the exam is higher from these areas. I have seen a lot of students make the common mistake of reading too much or reading everything that comes their way at the last minute.

I have created a document aggregating the founding years of top companies. I believe that such timelines will be very helpful in eliminating options. To be honest, I do not think that many people are even capable of remembering the founding years of so many companies. I try to have a rough idea about the founding dates with respect to significant events, like the world wars in case of global companies, and our independence in case of Indian companies. Having a feel of history helps to know which options are impossible as answers.

    Timelines from Ravi Handa

I hope you found this post helpful and will now be a little more positive about cracking the GK section in XAT 2013.

Author Ravi Handa has taught Quantitative Aptitude at IMS for 4 years. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur where he studied a dual-degree in computer science, he has also launched an online course for XAT 2013 GK.

    • DEVILISHANGEL Very frankly, the best recent step taken by any top mba institute in India stands as this.
This was need of the hour and it only will improve the talent pool at the amazing b-school.
I can only wish CAT follows on XAT's footstep, but I know it won't because its too busy trying to ape GMAT, which is going to be its failing while trying to do so.

Business GK/GA should be known to each and everyone who get into a business school mandatorily. I can't thank the b-school enough for taking this step and the results will be seen immediately.

    • ravihanda @DEVILISHANGEL Fully agree with you.

    • DEVILISHANGEL @ravihanda: all: I had IMS, TIME, CL subscription for CAT Prep. Only your free website helped in the end ;) had got a ~97 because of you-3 years back! :D for everyone who is listening...here is the crux. You can only understand concepts - and no one does that better for noobs than ravi handa :D

    • DEVILISHANGEL @ravihanda: it is strange though that a lot of b-schools and students themselves never understand what I stated. I have seen that a class full of quizzers is the most amazing thing to have. Any top 15 B-School Class with a lot of quizzers is and always has been the most amazing place to learn, discuss and discover new things. What I am trying to state is, knowing things is never a bad thing because it always give you a perspective and sets the context right. Business GK/GA is equivalent to the X and Y axis in a graph, people who are conversant with Business GK/GA are people who know what the X & Y axis labels are. And thats a world of difference :)

      Cheers.

    • ravihanda @DEVILISHANGEL I have had the exact same discussion with some profs - they do not deny the importance of GA - but believe that it gets checked during the later rounds of GD-PI. They do not wish / want this to be a deciding factor for giving a call.

    • cynicall @ravihanda
sir do u think this would be the case in XAT too. GK score being used in later stage not for giving call. Plz share smthing on this also.
      #31 • 13 Dec '12 Like
    • ravihanda @cynicall I have absolutely no idea how it will be used in XAT / XLRI. But think about this - if they are testing a candidates' GA - it would not be done for fun but to select / reject candidates. :)

    • DEVILISHANGEL @ravihanda: sir even during later stages of an MBA like for summers and finals, mostly academics becomes a hygiene factor, strange as it may sound. What decides selection is what you have done in the past, ECA and more importantly General Awareness of the business area the company is in and Attitude. The later two things have the most impact on the immediate assessment of the candidate for the job because the company and the person in charge wants to see how much the candidate knows in a very less amount of time. So quizzers have always had a distinct advantage here because they can pull-off any discussion given their length and breadth of the know-how. I am sure pass-outs will agree with me :)
      #33 • 13 Dec '12 Like
    • ravihanda @DEVILISHANGEL What you are saying might be true with the MBAs. Let me assure you that quizzers have no such advantage when it comes to Engineering placements.

    • Praxis.B.School @ravihanda - Good article. If followed, your tips could sure help one become a quizzer :)

This introduction of GK section had certainly made aspirants worried. Thank you PG for coming up with this article.

    • unisol @ravihanda Sir and @DEVILISHANGEL Sir: Don't you think this area(call it quiz/ GK/GA) should be made a mandate in every b-school curriculum rather than forcing it to be an eligibility criterion and thereby chancing to lose out on potential candidates(read:logically potential) from their very entering the top b-schools itself?
      #37 • 13 Dec '12 Like
    • ravihanda @unisol I don't believe that this area (Quiz / GK / GA) can be taught and so making it a part of the curriculum would be an exercise in futility. Having it as a selection criteria is a good idea because it would help select the candidates who are aware of the environment around them and what is going on in the world.
I know that my first statement is contradictory as I have a course on GK / GA and a book on Business Quizzing but those are made with the target of scoring well in exams and doing better in quizzes, which is really different from teaching / learning this area (Quiz / GK / GA)

    • jitrana I Know quizzy people are dying to "support" GA/GK etc for MBA selection process. Fine, u need to know the current business scenario, fiscal condition etc to take decisions while being a manager. But how do things like "who won more gold in CW games", "who is the president of Ecuador", "what's the tagline of a certain company" ... help a manager to be a better decision maker. Management shud be about knowing who knows what, allocating job to ppl who know how to do it AND eager to do it, understanding psyche, a strategist, someone who 'catches' a hoodwink, someone who impartially imparts appraisals, not the one who can answer any GK answer within 2 secs!! Ask questions on decision making, ethics, strategy, logical constructs, logic-puzzles. GK is the job of know-it-all quiz masters. Managers are decision makers, not a on-the-run Wikipedia.
I know my post will get 100 comments in negation. Or even liable to be banned for sometime as is the rule with kindergarten cops of PG... but just 'decided' to opine. :-)
      #39 • 13 Dec '12 Like 6
    • ravihanda @jitrana I think by testing GK the B-Schools are not trying to check how much of a Wikipedia clone you are (that is what quizzes are for). By testing GK, the entrance exams are trying to test whether or not you are aware of your surroundings and not someone who just does well in Maths & English. I completely agree that questions on decision making, ethics, strategy, logical constructs, logic-puzzles are a good idea and probably that is the reason that XAT already has those. To be honest, questions on anything makes more sense than questions on Euler's Theorem to find remainder.
