Interview with BITS Pilani student who topped CMAT September 2012
by Shashank Venkat in CMAT 2012 results, CMAT topper, Anirudh Batra on 17 October '12

Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) September 2012 topper Anirudh Batra is very unlike your common breed of toppers. While being happy about the fact that he has topped the exam, he is not over the moon yet. Pursuing his fourth year engineering course in electronics and telecommunications from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, Anirudh speaks to PaGaLGuY about topping the CMAT.

Congrats! So how are you feeling about topping the CMAT?

Thanks. I am feeling very good about it.

Did you expect that you will become the topper?

No I did not expect it. It came as a surprise.

How did you prepare for the exam?

I was basically preparing for Common Admission Test (CAT) 2012. I did not do any focussed preparation for CMAT. I prepared for about 10 months for the exam. The last few days before the exam I was studying for about two and a half hours everyday.

You are saying that you did not do any focussed preparation for CMAT. How did you take care of the General Knowledge (GK) section?

I used to read the newspaper everyday. Apart from that, I did not do anything else for GK.

CMAT is a speed based exam. So, how did you work on that?

I took some speed enhancement tests at my coaching institute. I also took one mock CMAT.

What role did the coaching institute play in your success?

I went to a premier coaching institute in Pilani. It was pretty helpful. Enrolling in a coaching institute obviously helped me on what to study, the areas to focus on etc.

How was your experience with CMAT this year?

I had 3-4 wrong questions in my paper.

Which other exams are you appearing for?

I am taking CAT as well as XAT.

Which colleges are you targeting through CMAT?

I have not decided on that yet. If I do not get a good score in CAT, I might even try next year. But honestly, I have not given it too much of a thought.

So, does that mean you will not target top b-schools in Mumbai?

My first aim is CAT and I want to crack that. I am not sure whether I will apply to top b-schools in Mumbai or not. This is my first attempt at CAT and CMAT, so I can always try next year again. I have time on hand and I am in no hurry to join a b-school.

So, which are your dream b-schools?

I am targeting the older IIMs, XLRI and Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), New Delhi.

You come across as someone who is not going overboard with the CMAT results.

As I said my focus is on CAT. I am taking the CAT on October 25. So, I am keeping everything toned down as of now.

    Tell us your family background.

I live in a joint family. Although I stay at a hostel in Pilani, my family is based out of Delhi. I am a Paschim Vihar resident. We are six of us – grandmother, aunt, sister and my parents.

What did they say when they heard about your results?

    They were elated.

So, is a gift in store for you?

Have not thought about it. Maybe something later.

Ever thought of being an entrepreneur?

No, it’s too far off to think really.

Will this CMAT performance help you during CAT?

Ya, it has given me the confidence that I can do it. As this was my first time, it has given me a good understanding of where I stand.

You have become an overnight celebrity of sorts. How does that feel?

Nothing special! It’s all the same. Ofcourse I am very happy. As I said before, I am taking the CAT in some days. So, maybe will have a party after that.

Your advice to future CMAT aspirants.

(laughs) I am in no position to offer any advice. The only thing I can say is be regular with your studies.

    • ayushnasa @warriorprince99 He must have got a paper with a wrong question and he must have attempted it. AICTE had said, in such a case, the marks will be calculated from reduced number of questions (For eg, if 1 question was wrong, marks will be calculated in the section from 96) and then the base would be changed to 100 and rounded off. So it is entirely possible

    • DEVILISHANGEL @gs4890: I doubt that. People, if they qualify, will look beyond the obvious...as you can see fmor the interview itself. thats the point...

      #33 • 18 Oct '12 Like 1
    • ayushnasa @Abhi00707 One word for your chances.."bright". JB is within reach if you are a Maharashtrian. If not, nearly all others are surely easy shots

    • alakh-niranjan how can you get a score of 94 in quant...anirudh batra (CMAT topper)?

I mean it was a (+4/-1) scheme and 25 questions were there...so that means he got 24 correct and 2 wrong which takes the total to 26 questions

    • quartlifecrisis I bet someone would reach 400 milestone in Feb CMAT. And there can be 500+ folks in 350+ marks - blowing away the Sep CMAT all together. I do not know what AICTE or the individual colleges or state authorities will do in that case. This way the Sep CMAT would be annulled.
      #39 • 19 Oct '12 Like 1
    • ayushnasa @quartlifecrisis There are 14 people above 300. And highest is 330....500+ are above 250, not 350

    • quartlifecrisis @ayushnasa I was talking of potential results of Feb CMAT. Everyone is going to gear up after CAT results and this will push scores beyond 350 for many candidates - expect a 1000 above 350 for Feb/March version of CMAT. Just my prediction - nothing else.
      #41 • 21 Oct '12 Like
    • ayushnasa @quartlifecrisis And that would simply mean we would need to push EVEN HARDER :mg:
PS: And believe me, there are going to be at max 3-4 beyond the 350 marks..If GK were not there, this would obviously not have been the case. But GK helps keep the score lower...
      #42 • 21 Oct '12 Like 1
    • quartlifecrisis @ayushnasa You are not getting numbers right. If 2L plus people write the CMAT in feb/march , then 99 %iler is going to be ranked 2000. As AICTE has clarified the best of the marks of two exams would be considered, we would have people aiming to beat the 330 mark. Plus those who are in rank 400-500 like me would want to strut to the top 40 somehow. In the end we will all make a mockery of ourselves .
      #43 • 21 Oct '12 Like
    • ayushnasa @quartlifecrisis Lets just wait and see what happens :mg: No point in speculating before even the forms are out :splat: I do not believe that the score will reach those heights for 500 people. Last time highest was 327..Everyone had the target and the highest rose to just 330. You have one view. I have another....Let's just rest back and watch it unfold...Peace

    • quartlifecrisis @ayushnasa CMAT is becoming a diplomatic fight between state and centre. Imagine if they lift the state quota how would the demographic look ? Anyhow by usual trends Feb exams tend to be easier.
      #46 • 21 Oct '12 Like
    • warriorprince99 @Adi_wilwin no... i think watever @ayushnasa said is correct.... he attempted 25q one question he got it wrong and two were incorrect so all in all out of 23 he gt 22 correct so for 25 dey scaled d score... some thing like dat...
