    Long waiting hours, change in testing centre for some test takers in Delhi
    by Astha A in CAT 2012, Prometric, Exam failure on 21 October '12

    Candidates scheduled to appear for the Common Admission Test (CAT) at Asia Pacific Institute of Management in New Delhi today faced technical snags and had to spend almost eleven hours at the centre, while some had to travel all the way to the Gurgaon test centre to appear for their test.

    Elaborating on her experience, one test taker from the morning slot said she reached the centre at 8:30 AM. Although all students were allowed inside the waiting area of the institute, around 40 students who were booked to appear for their exam in labs L1 and EB were only allowed inside the labs by 10:00 AM. Once inside, all other candidates except this group were allowed to start their exam. After waiting for more than an hour, the forty-odd students were again led to the waiting area, where they were served lunch.

    Questioned about the reason behind the delay, Prometric authorities at the centre blamed a short circuit in the servers as the major cause. “Insisting that they are in conversation with senior officials from Prometric about how to solve the issue best, they asked us to be patient,” the candidate said. Finally, the candidates were allowed in the labs at 3:00 PM. Students began their test scheduled for 10:00 AM at 3:30 PM. Having reached the centre at 8:30 AM, this candidate finally reached home at 7:15 PM.

    While the morning slot people had an agonizing wait, those scheduled for the afternoon slot had to travel to another centre altogether. One of the candidates in the afternoon slot said that he reached the centre at 12:30 PM. There were no clear instructions from people standing at the entrance and the candidates were asked to wait. Around 2:00 PM, the authorities communicated that there were some technical snags and travel arrangements were being made to take the candidates to the test centre in Gurgaon.

    He added that only a few students who were booked to appear for their exam in two of the labs were not allowed inside. This led to confusion and unrest amongst the parents and students who were not allowed in the centre. In the meanwhile, the Prometric authorities arranged a bus to take half the batch of students to the Gurgaon test centre while the other half were asked to wait. “We were told that they are fixing the technical snags and we would be able to start our exam soon,” the candidate said.

    After a fruitless wait, the Prometric authorities finally arranged a bus to take this group of students to the Gurgaon centre as well. Having reached the centre at around 5:15 PM, the students began their test between 5:30 PM and 5:45 PM.

    • Rohitphulsunge @Shikari89: IIMs are not managing Prometric, they just have a partnership with them for conducting online CAT. All these glitches in this year's CAT exam might just prove to be a tipping point for the termination of their contract with Prometric!!

    • abhicc Copy-Cats, huh >_<

      GMAT ka pattern follow kar liya, achcha bhala exam jo poore desh k students ek hi din mein de paate the, ab usi exam ko 1 mahine k liye extend kar diya, format change karke ONLINE kiya, aankh band karke Prometric ko contract de diya (kyunki wo GMAT conduct karate hein).... heights of copying.. yar agar copy karna tha to pehle exam Computer-Adaptive banate... exam ki fees badh gayi... GMAT online to hota hai but there is a huge flexibility in taking the test throughout the year... how can you compare it with CAT jo saal mein ek baar hota hai n ek choti si galti ki wajah se (any little fault/technical glitch, be it on the part of the so called PROMETRIC or the Online Format), ek student ka 1 saal waste hota hai... NMAT is still way better than these stupid cases observed during CAT.. atleast they are flexible enough to provide students with a broader & more flexible testing window and also 3 attempts for the same year is anyday better than those pathetic resheduling in CAT or waiting for 8-10 hours... I guess abhi bhi 3 saal hi hue hein, its not a matter of disgrace agar IIMs Online CAT ko successfully conduct nahi kara paye to kya hua, not a big deal, they should accept that IT IS OKAY... ab to samajh lena chahiye, there is still a way for retreat, the so called IIMs should not be egoistic in this matter k nahi we wont change our decision.. Even if it does not matter to you but Sir, it matters to the students preparing rigrously just to perfrom their level best in those 140 mins of their lives.. its matters a lot!!

    • Siddharthmalani this means that no matter how confident you are and how prepared you are, all it boils down to is luck...with all the quota systems and gender biasness, now luck factor has also become an integral part of one of the most competitive exams in india..
      no wonder cracking cat is becoming tougher by the day.. :)

    • Rohitphulsunge The more you think its difficult, the more it will be. Luck is always a part of any exam be it board exams or CAT exam. Yeah but I agree that last minute changes of examination centers, technical faults on the part of Prometric etc has made it more worse for the candidates unfortunately!! @Siddharthmalani

    • jhakdavelu IIMs have a deal with prometric for 5 years, so nothing will happen till next year. May be, they will choose another vendor after that, but no chance of getting back to paper format.
      And if the new vendor also starts learning, we may have another 2009 in 2014

    • Nipunkumar I wonder if they will "normalize" the score of the above mentioned candidates. Just a thought.

    • bsmcoolguy The Prometric Testing Centre at Iris Tech Park , Gurgaon is one to choose for. When I was filling my form I was disappointed at not getting any centres in Delhi so I chose The gurgaon one and my oh my their centre is dedicated to just test-taking. There was a power outage for a brief 20 second period , but our PCs had back-up and did not turn off. It is named as Prometric Testing Solutions. One of the best testing experiences ever and certainly glitch-free.

    • happy3475 appears PROMETRIC has taken the meaning of "OUT-SOURCING" rather too seriously....SORRY for all those who suffered for a bunch of morons who even though teach management ..have no idea what it is all about.....

      P.S.- mera CAT 5th ko hai....gadbad hui to kasaam hai....."PANGA HO JAYEGA"..:drinking::drinking:
