The Common Admision Test (CAT) 2012 will be conducted from October 11 to November 6, 2012. The test will comprise of two sections which will be seperately timed. Each of the sections will be 1 hour and 10 minutes. There will be 30 questions in each section.

According to Prof SSS Kumar, CAT Convenor for CAT 2012, the two sections will include Quantiative Ability and Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. "Once a section ends, aspirants can no longer go back to it. Aspirants will be presented with the section on Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation first , followed by Verbal Ability and Logical Reasonings."

Vouchers will be avilable from July 30 to September 17, 2012 while the registration window wll be open from July 30 to September 19, 2012. Results wll be announced on January 9, 2013. The official notification of CAT 2012 will be published in the national dailies on July 22, 2012.

PaGaLGuY had an exclusive and small chat with Prof SSS Kumar, who is otherwise quite media-shy

How do you feel donning the CAT Convenor's hat this year?

Its a great responsibility and fully focused on our goal conducting CAT 2012 successfully, befitting of the lofty standards set by IIMs in the past. At present, we are sparing no efforts to give a trouble free experience to CAT 2012 aspirants in the process of registration and appearing in CAT 2012.

Is there anything that you will take as learning from past CAT convenors?

As CBT is in evolution mode, experiences of the past convenors provide the guiding light for the conduct of CAT 2012.

Are you happy that the post have come down south to IIMK after IIMC,IIML and IIMA held the honour earlier?
I am glad that the responsibility came to IIMK but importantly CAT had been and will be a collective effort of all IIMs. The key factor behind the success of CAT is the team work and joint efforts of the entire IIM
    fraternity across the IIMs.

Have you got into CAT work full-time?
Yes, my work started from April 2012 and will be working out from Kozhikode only.

    • Sociopath Definitely wont be giving exam on weekends i.e., Sat/Sun, else it will have to face the fierce competition with CAT savvy's. Better to give anyday from Monday to Friday to avoid being victim of normalizatio against brightest minds ...... !!

    • rahulhbk1 @pratik5317 You would not want to give CAT on a day when you expect the competition to be more intense . Many toppers like to give at the end , so scaled scores were less for people who gave CAT in the last slots , as has beenobserved in CAT'11

    • rahulhbk1 sry it was for @krishna581

    • workaholic198 @krishna581 CAT normalizes ur score to reach at the percentile.Though normalization process is not very clear, but it is based upon sample size of number of students appeared in a particular time slot. Then accordingly all the questions are given a difficulty level based on how many cld answer it correctly or incorrectly from amongst the sample data. Now suppose if u are in the slot with large no. Of candidate then a particular question which u may leave or do wrong, may have been attempted by many others (probability is higher), thus it will be marked as easy and u will loose credit for doing an easy question wrong, resulting in significant loss of final percentile. And if by any chance a very very bright student is in ur slot,ur percentile will suffer!! Thus its preffered to sit in a slot with relatively less crowd.

Hope this helps.More info can be provided by odrs!! ATB to u and me too :)

    • krishna581 @workaholic198 you mean normalization is done in each slot and final percentile is given based on this normalization?
      #36 • 18 Jul '12 Like
    • pandit_pujari CAT is starting and ending 15 days earlier than last year

    • pandit_pujari I think that first day, last day or week day is all bullshit and everything comes out to only two facts - How prepared you are and Whether the day you are appearing for CAT is YOUR DAY or not. So, puys relax, don't be overruled by speculations and give the test as per your actual requirements.
      #39 • 18 Jul '12 Like 54
    • krishna581 @panditpujari haha pandit ji....it does have definite implications on the percentile......no body is panicking here.....just making the things clear....
