Naach na jaane, kahe aangan teda
(Kahe "most absurd" rather)

Must say you are one lucky ignorant chap. Lucky 'coz this stupidly rude post of yours remained un-replied for so long (thanks to my 10 day vacation package!) and ignorant 'coz you don't have even the slightest to whom you are arguing in the said subject. Anyway, ignorance overruled!

Prior to the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976, a purely literal and legalistic interpretation of the Articles conferring powers upon the President conveys the impression that the President, if he so desires, could become a dictator (Also held by the SC in many cases) Article 53(I) clearly left a scope then for the President, if he so chooses, to become the real ruler and not to remain just the nominal head of the Union. It was only after the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976 that the function of council of Ministers came into being. That is without their consent, President can indeed do nothing. And that is why it is said that his position is like that of "rubber stamp".

BUT having said that, the President, with advice and assent of Council of Ministers, can prove so much more than just a "rubber stamp" i.e. he then can easily manage to seize all executive powers by dissolving the Parliament and declaring state emergency thereby suspending fundamental rights. And as the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, he can use military to suppress civil force. And even without VIOLATING the Constitution, an ambitious President can therefore become the real ruler of India.
@Both: Please don't quote me back just for the heck by questioning or rubbishing my points. I abhor that. Come up with your authentic sources (rather than juvenile arguements) and I'm game for it.
