Why you chose IIM over any foreign university/college ?

I have couple of my friends who were preparing to CAT with me and when they could not crack CAT they opted for GMAT and they made it to Ivy league B-schools. So the hard and ugly truth is that getting in foreign university is far easier than getting in IIM or any of the top 15 B-School in India. So for me it was more of a challenge to get in IIM. Also I wanted to get that famous tag of IIT+IIM.

Whatever you had expected to happen in your life happened according to your plan OR you are the person who goes with the flow of river means you had no concrete plans?

I dont try to plan for every small thing but yes, most of the big goals that I have set in my life till date I have achieved it. I must say God has been very kind to me.

Have you ever faced failure in your life if yes then how you faced/conquered it?

I have faced many failures in my life and I will be honest here to say that I could not conquer all of them. And I learned a lot from the failures that I could not conquer. You will not be able to beat all your opponents all the time, you will not succeed in all your efforts, but the way we treat success as milestones, failures also need to be treated as milestones of life. In the process of journey we do not get stuck to milestones but we cross them and leave them behind with a hope of crossing the next one.

What was you engineering branch ?

My branch was Ocean Engineering and Naval Architechture, Basically design of ships of all types and deep ocean related structures and Engineering.

Why not M.S/M.tech ? Didn't you like your branch?

I did want to go for MS/MTech. but money was a major constraint. Dint have enough money to write GRE and apply to Foreign schools when I was passing out of IIT. This was a failure and I could not conquer it. But no regrets there! I think god had better plans for me.

What is your strongest and weakest point ?

My strongest point is that I am a very postive person, I never lose hope and even if failures and difficult situation surround me, I try not to lose faith in Almighty and keep trying make something meaningful out of given situation. One of my weak points is that I am not very diplomatic in my conversations, and this weakness has been deal breaker and reason for some of my failures. But to be honest, I have consciously chosen my straight forwardness over trying to be diplomatic/manipulative, even if it costs me some more failures.

Do you think you are successful/satisfied OR you want more ?

I really liked this question of yours, as this represents a very important philosophy of life.

I dont think I can say I am successful, and nor am I satisfied with what I have achieved till now. And I dont think I'll be ever satisfied. But more importantly I am happy with what I am and what god has given me. And I rate happiness over satisfaction, and satisfaction over success.

The day you are satisfied, journey of life ends, so for me there is still a lot to go.

What is your goal of life?

Start a educational institute or set up a trust which can help financially challenged to get best of education at least of the cost. (Maybe I am still trying to conquer my failure of unable to go for MS/Mtech due to financial constraint)

Compare these two statements:

1. I cleared CAT and went to IIM

2. I cleared CAT and went to IIM and after that I have helped at least 20 of my friends on PG to get in IIM.

I think second statement is far more motivating for two reasons, first the number of people with whom I share the idea of success is much larger as compared to statement #1. And second and more important reason is that in second statement the process of success is continuous and ever increasing. i.e. I will have 20 more friends on PG by this year end who would get into the B-Schools of their choice. And I would be always feel a sense of joy that I got a chance to be associated with some more success stories.

How is that I cannot help a person who is trying to climb a stiff wall to get one of his most desired things in life. And how is that I cannot feel happy if s/he achieves it with some amount of support from me?

2. Naga Saar, there is hardly anything that I can teach you. Your stature on PG is well known to all of us on PG. If there is anything that you would seek my opinion I would do that for sure with full honesty.

Regarding my technology platform, technology part is fully settled and I plan to use it extensively this year. Just working on finance and costing part of the technology platform. I would seek your and all other puys' help to make it a success.

3. I am really sorry that I did not post my professional story on the thread. Will do it for sure in coming days.

I hope that you too continue with PG for as long as possible,

2. Why I help people so much? I dont know the exact reason.........but may be when I was going through my tough phase (point3 of my first reply on this thread for details) I realized that getting into a good educational institute can make a lots of difference ..... so I feel really good when I can help people who are trying hard to achieve it..... when I see people working so hard and desperate I see images from my past.

3. How do I get awesome solutions? I frankly dont know.... so wont give any gyan on this.

4. My name is Vivek. Early childhood was great and luxurious. But then things turned real difficult when my family faced a real financial crunch (to the extent that I had to depend on scholarships for my study...and buying books for Engineering prep was a challenge). Both my parents were medically affected badly. (Details in my first post on this thread). While I was in IIT I used to got scholarships and in addition to studies I used to stay back at college during vacations and used to do some projects which would pay me some money and help me with my expenses during next semester. After IIT things improved a lot for me, my parents recovered from illness, financial conditions improved and I managed to get a job during recession (was real lucky there!!). When thing settled for good I decided to take CAT and in 2004 I cleared it. Post MBA I joined finance industry and currently I am working with an international investment bank, and head the equity deriv trading desk for India division.

5. My prime reason for MBA was to get into field of finance and I think it was a good decision. I had researched well before deciding for MBA so my perception about MBA hasn't really changed much

6. Again I dont have any direct answer to this. But when you want something badly and desperately it is the best source of motivation, as source of motivation lies within you in that case. And I believe that if the source of motivation is internal rather than external...chances that you will achieve what you want is very high.

7. Yes, I am married.

8. I feel that more than respect puys on PG love me. (despite all the calculation errors that I make). The single most important factor that has kept me going on PG is all the love that I have received from the puys year after year.

9. Life at IIM is a fast forward roller coaster ride, I went there to learn (and I never was after grades). I used to score very high in the subjects that I like and I hated marketing realted stuff. Made some real good friends there and had loads of fun.

10. I work for Macquarie in India and currently I am the senior Derivatives trader. (Basically I head the derivative trading desk for India division).

12. PG is awesome and Puys on PG are the best set of people you can get in touch with. determined to succeed, they compete like crazy but at the same time eager to help each other. They get sad but never demoralized. Their heart breaks when they do bad in an exam but there determination to succeed never breaks. Its great to watch and see the enthusiasm around. On PG its like a festival of intense competition all around the year. Its a great stress buster for me.

13. I am really not good at telling lies. This cost me a lot in my MBA days.

14. I wont advise you...I'll tell you..... you are a champion!!

15. Getting into good B school does involve some amount of luck factor, so you have to be patient. (This point will come out more clear in the post where I would talk more about my "take on life")

Phew!! those were a lots of questions to answer.

You have always made me work hard.

Talking about my profession and educational qualifications, I am an alumni of IIT batch 2002 and went to passed from IIM in 2007. Post that I have been a banker. Currently I head the Equity derivative trading desk in an investment bank.

2. My ambition in life is to start a non-profit education institute which can help financially challenged set of people achieve best quality education. I plan to start in next 7-10 years.

3. Yes, when I look back now I think I am quite satisfied with what ever god has showered upon me till now and I am really very thankful to him. I faced some real odds in my life but God stood by my side. Just to give an example, I was financially so challenged after my class 10th that my future course of studies was dependent on the scholarships that I received ("Scholarship band padhai band"). While I was preparing for IIT JEE, buying a new book was a challenge for me but then it always happened to me that I could buy some second hand books. One of the reason that I am good at maths and poor at chemistry is that mathematics books are cheaper as compared to chemistry book, so I always could manage buying maths books but for chemistry I was dependent on school library. In addition there were some more challenges but with God by my side, everything worked fine. Now I am sure you would agree that I cannot really complain about things.

4&5. As I have said earlier, that I have been here on PG since 2004, perhaps that tells a lot about what PG means to me. I think PG is the best place for anyone who is serious about clearing B-School exams. And the best part PG is the puys who are so enthusiastic and helpful. I have made some real good friends at PG, and PG is place where I have ended up learning a lots of stuff, and I am still learning.

6. My interests are puzzle solving. I am a avid rubik cube solver, and currently I am struggling with 7x7x7 cube. And I love old hindi film music. And last but not the least .....PG is one of my very strong interests. And I follow the world of finance very closely (due to nature of my work)

7. Hard and honest labor never goes unrewarded, but at the same time getting in a good B-School has some amount of luck factor involved so be patient and dont be in a hurry to get in any B-School. if you think you are capable of IIM or Harvard or Standford, never settle for anything less than that. "MBA karne ki koi umar nahin hoti" so dont compromise.

Very very sorry Ajay. Will definitely drop to QIA soon and treat is on me for this. OK answers -
1) I was a very rough, brawly kind of guy in Lucknow. Ask people about Colvin Taluqdars' in Lucknow in late 1990s. In front of Lko University which was in itself was the hub of UP politics. So I was brash, never cared about anything till then. NITC changed a lot. Honestly, Kerala is like a foreign country for someone from North. Language, culture and then the engg and hostel mindset. Amazing experience and I still think it was one of the best decisions of my life. It gave me perspective into how different cultures can come together and they still have their pecularities. Nothing is good or bad. It is just how you see it.
Life was good. Life in general, let's discuss it offline. Too much uncensored stuff. I just thank God everyday that cameras were not so prevalent then. :)

5) No MBA as such. But yes, I do want to study at a institution at some point of time. I am very much interested in Behavioral Economics. If there has to be something, it will be more towards our social interactions and how we behave. Anthropology interests me too.
6) MBA in India needs to move away from bschools being placement agencies. I think that sums up my perspective.
7) No message yet. I have not done anything enough in life to give gyan to people on this. Just, dig your own road.

9) Been too long, too old to remember that. But we have had fun times.
