HAVE is present tense.
so you would use
if you ARE satisfied with what you HAVE.

had you written
if you satisfied with what you HAD
then, since HAD is in past tense,
you would use WERE
if you WERE satisfied with what you HAD.

how ever, such use of past tense is for hypothetical situations.

Ex : if i were you .....

The best way to say that one line is

If you are satisfied with what you have, you'd do no good with them.

The meaning here is one should not remain satisfied with what he has.
if one remains satisfied with what he has, he won't do any good with them

when you construct the following sentence
if you were satisfied with what you have, you'd do no good with them.

the meaning is
one is NO LONGER satisfied with what he has already ! ( if you were satisfied ---- means you are no longer satisfied )

so you don't give him the advice not to remain satisfied. that is redundant and not what saying originally intends to convey. it really is Wrong usage of sentence construction using "were" !!!

I know not everybody can grasp this in one shot.
So here's one example :

when i say : "if you were satisfied with what you have, you wouldn't ask for more"
it means, you are not satisfied with what you have, and you are asking for more.
And even this is grammatically wrong.
the grammatically correct and logically correct sentence is
"if you were satisfied with what you HAD, you wouldn't be begging for more" .. etc...

i wouldn't tell this person something like "if you were satisfied with what you have, you should ask me more !"
similary i woudn't tell this person "if you were satisfied with what you have, you should ask for more. For unless you ask for more, you wouldn't do any good with what you already have". This is plain wrong !

I've done my best to explain usage of are/were in a sentence construction.
All those who benefit out of it, can thank me later.
Those who continue to get offended, can keep groaning.

And finally, i'd like to end this marathon post by quoting something i came across recently.

If you take offence personally, you would be offended for the rest of your life !

Cheers
