Actually, thinking more abt it, it depends on the passion you have towards institutes (absolutely nothing wrong it it), and more on the age-factor. If one is really young, in the sense, just out of the college, final year in the college etc, one always have the option of taking it the second time, coz, one cud even go for the thrid time if nothing works.

But its tough for go for more tries for a guy/gal with 2/3 yrs experience.. Passion is a different matter though.

Have you folks read abt the IITians, and what makes them good? The reasoning is "If you put 2000 of some of India's brighest kids and make them study together for 2 years, the product is going to be good, anyday."
Now, why do I state that? Im stressing on the "india's brighest kids" factor.

Now, coming to ABC vs LIK, and forgetting the fact that I can't think of ABC this year, how many students end up in ABC the first attempt? Definitely not 100%. :)

There are scores of them who get around 90-97 in the first attempt, no IIM, no XL, no FMS, slog their $%%& , get into ABCs next year. There are scores of them who scrapre thro LIK in the first attempt. They try and get into ABC the next year. So, are these students intellectually 'enlightened' in a year, do they become extra-geniuses in a matter of 360 odd days? How different in Mr X in LIK in the first attempt from Mr X in ABC in the second attempt? Mr X is Mr X, and there is no room for argument. Do these people make ABC's better off than LIK's? Maybe, may be not. But I dont think they do. What I'm trying to say is, speaking abt the capability of students, there is no much difference b/w ABC and LIK. . This is exactly the reason why top-companies go to many colleges rather than a single college. Take say companyX that goes to all IIMs. If they need 60 folks, they pick approx 10 each from all IIMs. They don't go to A or B and pick 60 there, because students wise, there is no *much* difference. :-P

Now ABC's have been in the field for a long time, their alumni base is strong. Thats the reason why they have the coveted foriegn placements, xtra- brand name etc, but LIKs aren't that worse off.. Repeating my argument abt L. When it started in 1986, XL was 'flagship'ping. Now L is equal or better than XL - the general perception. What did it take to make L stand high? The brand name for one, and everything else follows. Now look at I and K. Its hardly five years in the field, and they are in the top-10, if not the top 7/8.

Taken that I would choose ABC instead of LIK anyday, but that doesn't mean that LIK is bad. Ofcourse, its the individual perceptions that matter, but in the end, if students make up the college, there is no reason why non-ABC's be deemed strict 'untouchables', that too after reaching this far. If we are speaking abt placements, international Xchange programs *alone*, I'd say it makes sense to go to ABC. Not because LIK is bad, or that peer capability is less, or that their 'name' aren't famous.

Its the confidence in us that matters *most*. We don't have to prove to the world that we are good because we got into ABC. Because in the end, we are what we are. . Just MHO.

But comeon,here we are talking about IIM-I/K and IIMABC...

On one hand you say One should Know "why an MBA ?"Definetly it would include some Long Term and Short Term Plans only....If someones reason to "DO" an MBA is to study in IIMABC..then perhaps he is not ready enuf :)...Any reason in which IIM I/K cant stiasfy someones career plans...agreed GS does not go there and other similar stuff but its pretty trivial!

if going to an IIMABC is someones personal statement in life....nothing wrong..but its kiddish...i guess when we go to an IIM we become ready for BIG things in life...if someone cant let such small issues like "why im not at IIMABC"then he is just not prepared for an MBA .....about being a perfect fit....who knows his fit ?... One lucky day and i could make it into an IIMABC but that does not mean other guys are any less smarter than me....by god i wont risk another interview to find that out :)

When we are selected at an IIM its assured that we will be studying with an amzing group of people...just the competition assures that....

We dont have any of our junta in IIML - so info is hard to come by. That will change next year as we have many of our people going to IIML this year. International placements are dependent on various factors including work ex , CGPA and other issues. The max international as far as I know happens in IIMA and IIMC and I am not sure about IIMB in regards to that :)

I am ready to let go of certain issues in life..yes...but certain things are part of you...if you let it go...you stop to exist...I don't expect you to understand it...but then that doesn't mean I am wrong or "deranged". I have really seen at many times people axing their own foot. Usually the are the ones who tend to make statements like the ones above. If 10 years down the line you are going to rue that you graduated out of IIM I/K - I seriously wonder if you ever 'let go' of issues in life.

Even today you rue that you didn't make it to an IIT or didn't choose to take a second shot - nice for the ego - but for all practical reasons - its downright ego maniacal.

Don't take up IIMI/K - fair enough - but make sure the reason has more to do with what they can't give you or for the reasons that they don't align with your career aspirations.

Maintain a high personal and moral codes - fair enough. Thats the mark of a gentleman. But to rue over your past - almost inconsequential issues like the college you graduate from and that too over a period of years .. its almost deranged. Almost deranged.

since we have shared the learnings of JEE and even that of an IIT Grad lets have one more analogy that i think is quiet appropriate....

First,lets get the assumptions right..IITS and IIMS are different in what they teach But enjoy EQUAL Reputation....

IIT B,D,KGP,KNP,Chennai ======= IIM ABC ( they are as good as they come)

IIT Roorkee =========== IIML (Roorkee guys..i know you are the among the best too )

IIT Guwahati =============== IIM I/K (New insti,far off place )

Now since its an IIM where we compete for 1000 seats and not 2500 odd as in jee lets assume IITS Top Branches as as equivalent to IIM Admission......

Now if i have a rank to get into IIT Roorkee Computer Science (lets assume it has the best placement among IITR branches and is really my area of interest )...and im not getting IIT B,C,D,KGP,KNP Comp Science......will i even think of giving JEE Again...NO..I will Happily take IIT Roorkee...because its "VERY GOOD GUYS"

Same for Guwahati.....I know many friends from Guwahati CSE who are doing as well as their Kharagpur or Delhi counterparts....whether it be scholarships form US univs OR working at Microsoft,SUN or Intel.....See the best at all the IITS are in the same league...all can Land an MIT/CMU Admit any given day...its only the guys who are in the lower half in the class who have problems in guwahati.....

if we assume that we would most likely end up in that half then Guwahati might be a bad choice but their is not much hope for guys like that anyway!

The factors that really matter are

Institute : IIMI/K are Very Good
Placements: Maybe they have fewer companies coming but avg salary looks really
attarctive
IIM Tag : No one can take that away ! (IITG Grads are as much demand in MS
as IITK grad.They will grill you anyway)

An IIM Tag can only provide you with an oppurtuniy...you have to fight then to proove yourself..An IIMABC Guy doesnot become a born CEO..you have to work for that...same thing applies to IIMI/K Grads

And about the kind of person you are .....well,even i am an engg from NIT Jalandhar and an IIT Freak..didnt get through jee...joined REC Comp Sci...felt sick everytime i crossed IIT Delhi campus,my sis lives close by.....even sobbed twice!...but guys in the end life goes on...the pain goes off...you feel confident again...its upon you to either make or break yourself...no IIT/IIM can do that to you...passed out in 2003...working at Oracle now and im doing some good work...i feel as technically sound as any guy around...and even my REC Tag is working fine......So,even without the IIT Tag people survive...but its good to be IITIAN anyday :)

In IIMI/K you have the tag...thats THE most important thing...its foolish to evn think of IIMABC and thats it...the rest are as good as any...and after that its YOU....
Their is nothing like Im made for IIMABC...you take your chances and you do as good as possible....wjat happends is out of your control anyway...

Maybe if you have options like a Microsoft Job (Pays as high as that of an MBA) or an onsite chance then a second chance might have made a bit of sense because that would only add up on your profile....but without some very good reason just for the sake of your ego...its a bad choice....

Looking another way its a chance to adapt yourself and make the best of the oppurtunity....in business you dont always get the best thing to run...you take something which is good but not the best and make best use of it....this is an ideal situation...dont run away from it....

And guys,since its a long post dont take offence on any part if it has come out badly...i dont intend any!

Let me give u a different view to this topic all together...
Me got ranked in JEE '98 but a very bad one, decided to join the best local engg coll and take on JEE the next yr. Well cracked JEE '99 and went to IIT M B.Tech Chemical engg.
Now, some gyan... at the end of the day i am sitting after 4 yr.s with abviously an IIT degree and a 1 yr. less workex than my mates in the local coll who are in the top software comp.s in India....
Me tell you thats the same thing that happens ewhere. As long as you get in to a good college and for that matter IIM indore is definitely one among the best... with gr8 infra and stuff.... As long as the best students in India are going there there is nothing much to worry abt.
that's why i'm not gonna even think twice of writing CAT again...
Lemme tell ya friends... it is an Unpredictable exam... u r marking your life in those 2 hr.s ... and a 3-4 mark diff might make it or break it... so as long as you have one go for it...
JUST A SUBJECTIVE SUGGESTION....

okies _nil_ here is my take on this...I don't know personally Ashilles a.k.a Ashwin ofcourse..never chatted with him as well..so have absolutely no idea what kind of guy he is..but be that as it may *if* I had been in his position I wouldn't have taken IIMI..infact wouldn't have taken IIMK and IIML either...no offense meant to these institutes...there are no doubt one of the best....but the point is what kind of a person one is. I don't want to live 10 yrs down the line and think "what if?" ,"If only.." . And this is backed up by my confidence in my ability. Just as am sure Ashwin is abt his. You say it's a wrong attitude to lead a life? and one should make the best of what comes ones way? Touche! 4 yrs back I missed my IIT seat narrowly after slogging..I repeat..slogging for 2 yrs...and well joined SRMEC. thought it wasn't worth having a shot at IITJEE again next yr. And I have regretted that decision till date. I was a total misfit in the college as far as academics went. Yes it's all in the mindset no doubt. But then I am in control of my mind and I live by my moral code. It's humilating to oneself when one sets some personal standards and fail to match them. After all I am answerable to myself for the
decisions I take and to no one. And more importantly I am still 21 yrs young.

No doubt that the glamour that goes with IIM is great but again its IIMA then B/C then L and then I/K....We are people who are very young in the corporate world and are still heavily influenced by social-perception....

Point is we need a management degree and any IIM is VERY GOOD...It would have been a lot better for my ego had it been IIMA but then comeon,its IIMI.....

I dont think it serves any purpose to drop IIMI this year in search for ABC next year...Cracking CAT again is NOT a small thing...many of us have made it and may feel smug about it but we know given a second chance we would rather stick with our current percentiles :)....And then the whole agony of waiting for GDPI calls...interviews..final calls.....

Im not saying that its impossible or it cant be done...given another chance you might convert all six iims but it would require superhuman skills..dedication,frame of mind et al...with the same amount of commitment you might as well be a TOPPER at IIMI and believe me you would know more and get a better job then an AVG IIM ABC guy.....This i think is more sensible and much more satisfying....

Final decision should be your but for god-sake dont take an admit at iimi and give cat too...you might land up nowhere and even if you do personally i think profs would laugh you off at the inteview until you have a very very satisfying answer...

I think the discussion has deviated a lot from its origins and also from rational explanation .. sachkal nil was mentioning the very point that u r trying to raise .. that a degree or an insti can only take u so far and no further ..
btw .. IMHO IIM-I is definitely a good choice as a b-school but if u intend to have a re-try at CAT then work-ex is anyday better ..

..isnt it dumb to compare a person's level of confidence in this situation...there r many factors which makes a person inclined towards a particular B-School. When he is in a predicament(if u say this isnt ...then )..u have to look at both sides of the coin..get other's views and decide whatz best for U..

I have converted my I call( the only call I had) and am planning to join. I really can't understand why ppl with I call should think of even writing cat the next time. You r just wasting an yr guys. That is to say you are acquiring a lag time of 1 year which might not actually serve you any purpose.If you are looking for intl placements that is one thing very difficult to get.
One more thing: IIM I is youngest IIM and it is ranked no.5 by recruiters(Economic Times). So as long as there are good students, good recruiters,gr8 campus and the brand name of an IIM what else do you want.
Just think abt. it....

bilkool sahi baat absolutely correct. Have been doing some research/talking to people. And what comes out is what everybody, atleast the new PGs, wants to hear. Except the topmost students of A/B/C, the rest gets similar/comparable jobs as students from other institutes like L/K/I or SPJ or XL.

It is the competency or the skill @ work and not the school which you passed out from. Instii is past and how one works currently should decide the present..

And just one question from you Ashwin is that, what did u have on ur mind when u went for the interview of IIM I...Infact did you give it for the sake of experience or fun??? ...for the outcome shows that u seemed damn serious to the panel ... and i am really surprised at that

Actually my friend got thru L but cudn't convert B,I,K...He is hoping that if he gets thru I in the waiting list then he wud go for it, since it has one of the most beautiful campuses to boast of...He too was upset abt not converting B, but his take was that while there isn't that much difference in the final placements of B & L (considering max, mean & avg offers in both), its better to go to L since it is arnd 2 lacs cheaper over a period of 2 yrs...And that while he cud with hard work have been among the average guys at IIMB, the same wud help him be among the above average at IIML, thus he might end up with a better placement at L viz. his chances at B.

So Ashwin..the crux is that look at the positive side of what u have... Even if you convert a call next year from B or C...wud it be worth the year that u skipped by not joining I...Wait optimistically for IIML call for IIML is expected to release even a 2nd waiting list...Rest is upto u.

Hope u do gr8 in whatever u plan.

are not making clear why IIMI is least preffered in your list. And one more q to you

is if you really do not want to study at IIMI , then why you have opted for it. You can

write CAT next time sitting home or working somewhere but definitely not after

joining any IIM.

..isnt it dumb to compare a person's level of confidence in this situation...there r many factors which makes a person inclined towards a particular B-School. When he is in a predicament(if u say this isnt ...then )..u have to look at both sides of the coin..get other's views and decide whatz best for U..

Then why the Hell do u think A gets so much attention..the environment varies in every b-school...as he had said..I is incomparable in rigor....strict too...so some may not like dat..some even think abt extracurrics !!!! 1) I may be dumb but I didn't compare you with anybody.
2) I am high in confidence, you just can't disprove that.
3) You incline or decline or twist or bend, its your life. I don't control it. Neither did I try to do it.
4) I think my coin is fairer than yours. It doesn't stand on its head and bad-mouths anybody.
5) I have already decided whats best for me and haven't gone to you for your views. You made yours public.

I am almost completing 5 yrs in IT industry. I did my UG @ IIT Kanpur (Mech), poor acads by my standards. Now what I found/learnt in the last 5 yrs that there are folks from lesser known institutes working with a equivalent job profile. Any advantage that I might have in being from IITK is wiped out. Has to be/will be. Your immediate work/capabilities are what drives your career. You learn a lot about organization, managing people and emotions, HR perspectives. And thats why I believe MGMT studies makes more sense after work-ex. You tend to appreciate the finer points.

So coming back, if you PG-ed from A/B/C you get a good base. And if you do from L/K/I you still land in their boat down 3-4 years. Plus why waste a year @ I/K/L.

But then nobody stops you from giving CAT2004 while you study @ I/K/L. And off-course if you get A/B/C over lesser IIMs, you go for A/B/C.

I got call from K only this year. Got rejection from B and L. But in my case, I am too old for a CAT again next year

So all ya A/B/C folks see you in 3-4 years . Lets go for the kill !!!

honestly, i didn't want to say what you just said,, But Guys be confident of yourself too...

cmmon guys,,not being harsh and accepting the fact that you will be having many a queries,, but really see the types of questions being raised...

I will tell what our batch did when we faced lots of issues as our batch was the first one in the new campus...What each one of us did was to contribute in our ways to make things better and we DID show results..We never took - it is not possible sort of statements and have really helped ourselves in the process...

By seeing these type of doubts from the ppl sometimes i get the doubt about the

level of the profs sitting in the panel. Why they are allowing these low confident ppl

to enter the business schoos? These type of ppl have not changed their 4 yrs b4

mentality joining state engg college and one more time give JEE.

hey mann!! MBA trains you to enter the corporate world.

MBA means BUISNESS and BUISNESS menas PEOPLE. and it doesn't matter you are

in A B C X Y Z or I. If you have it, you can do it with or without MBA badge.

Have some confidence man. IIMs are about buisness training not

Mckinsey/Lehman/Goldmann. btw what's the strong reason not to join IIMI? by

doing this you are wasting a seat which can be filled by a good condidate.

plz do not spoil the seat as there are many people deseperate to study management.

i know i'm not too qualified to comment in ur case, but i think u should just weigh ur options.

most important is where u weant to be 20 yrs from now. do you think an extra year of work is more useful than starting mba now?

i is not bad by any standard. and like sachkal says, u could get into better comapanies later. the placemnet st iim's is only the diving board. each may take u to a different height, but what u do from there on is completely under ur control. from there on ur capability and abilities shine. so if u r good there is no reason why u shouldn't be as successful as any iim a grad.

just take time out and see what u want to really do. speak to some aluminis if possible. may be go to iim b and speak to some prof's. take a decision after that.

you are rt,, getting in any instii is never the endof ur career, but it does determine to some extent where ur career goes..the type of inputs you get, et al...forget about giving cat again, coz you won't get time,,,and one might about end up screwing acads as well..

One thing many people don't accept is that mckinsey and lehmanns may come to A,B,C but how many do they actually take,, and even if u can't join them from start, one can do so later by one's cali...and yaar it is all about U U and U and the instii processes in the same proportion,,,

so think about it..

tell me dude is getting into x/y/z/ institute the be all and end all of your career......

and indore is not that bad at all (this is an understatement). you might land up getting placed in the same company from indore (or say A next year)....

CAT is a 2 hour game ...you either score or get out...there's no 2nd chance...
you might as well get all the 6 calls next yaer...but you never know dude...
you might as well end up getting nothing... and along with the above mentioned PI i/vs thing.......This is what you have decide ..is the risk worth taking????only you can decide it because you are the best judge of urself..


My suggestion: get into IIMI , fill up the form for CAT (1100 max as of now )

and see how you fell about it all after 5-6 months at IIMI because i have heard your opinions change almost everyday at a b-school(MDI hell thread) and every day brings some new revelations with it... tell us your decision though...

firstly none of IIM I guys wrote CAT again and i don't know about 'K' take it from me.

Accepted that we don't have Mckinsey and Lehmanns visitng the campus, but that is all. you have IBMs JM Morgan, and all other there,,but you have to be good for getting there and so should be your profile...keep that in mind..

yup 5 chaps have gone abroad..for summers... Rigor in 'I' is something which is not easy to bear. and just appreciate this - if only after 5 years of existence, withough prominent alumni backing as of now, guys are getting placed, it is all about the processes and merit.

It is everywhere like that, after some time one's performance is the only criteria, and for that self + processes @ instii both are imortant..

Tell me one thing guys... is I that bad? I know its nothing compared to ABC, but I thought the options are almost equal in all the IIMs, excepting the few international placements in A, B, C ...

Im persoanlly thinking abt joining I if I dont get thro L even in the waitlists... pls pour ur thoughts... I have a damn good job, and in the industory for 2 yrs, altho its work is eating me alive!!

My senior in I is doing his summers in NKF (?) Singapore... So there is definitely oppurtunity abound there too... and ppl say it really doesnt matter which IIM you came from once you are in the job... pls pour in ur thoughts... I know I sound like a real ignoramus.

A friend of mine got into IIML last time .. didnt prepare much and gave CAT again and got a %ile of 99.95(not sure abt the exact figure) .. he has got into IIMC and has got IIMA WL ..so speaking prep-wise it might be possible to do it whiule at an IIM .. but think hard as to how much of a benefit u will actually get ..

Now the bigger prob as others have mentioned wud be convincing potential employers and b4 that .. the IIM PI panels

IMHO, one year of work-ex is ANY DAY better than getting into an IIM and trying AGAIN ..

i feel a years workex helps u make ur understanding of running of organisations better....ur perspectives are realistic

I woudn't much disagree with PG on this one and you wud have to be really convincing in front your prospective employers with such a take...

Anyhow a diff point is can you accept giving up this call coz in case after all the hard work you put in, due to some unforeseen circumstances things may not turn out your way and you wud end up with nothing in hand... well i say there is nothing wrong in taking ur chances again or accepting what you have right now with joy

Infact a number of people who are among the cream in IIMK/I have the prospect of doing better than an average from other IIMs... So PG's point is that don't end up joining IIMs and working for CAT2k4 when you shud be focussed towards what u have (viz. studies at IIM K/I)... Correct me if I am wrong PGbhai but if these folks can crack CAT2k4 without any extra efforts then shudn't they go for it after having joined IIM I/K.

I mean there are alot of them who think that they missed A/B/C by a small margin and deserve a second chance but wanna be on a safer side by not compromising on what they have in hand...

Again like many other things this is one grey area where opnions may vary and you need to check what suits you the best with the advise of those in these institutes or those who have passed out from them.

So I dont think much prep is needed for me to crack CAT( ) nyway, I have to concentrate on prep for gd/pi s ..

The point is that even if I join WIPRO, imnt gonna sit 20 hrs a day n do prep, but of course itz gonna be hectic.

You can actually try to convince your prospective employers using various reasons. Not impossible.

But would you have the *proper* reasons for leaving IIM Indore ?

I've heard of guys in MDI taking up CAT and making it into the IIMs. Not an impossibility actually, but is still a VERY narrow outlook you are taking here.

Also , both of you asking the queries are 21. Just out of engg .. You don't see the older ones asking this very question .. So again .. talk to a few work ex people .. preferably from the IIMs..and come to a decision

yes they wld be scared , but its not bout doing it at the cost of studies , only if u can do it easily without much prep (tht doesnt sound too tough rite now ) n may be make a switch if u hav things favouring u

the work option scares me cos coding day long is just not viable ,

actuallly id really like to know if it would look really bad on the record if u had change of management schools like tht , do pepl see it in a bad light generally?
