& Moreover, 'I' does need people to do things for it as of now, so that it builds the reputation. We should not act mean by only looking at what instii alone can do for us and not worrying about what we can do for instii,,,as it throws plethora of oppurtunitites....all for grabs...

Lemme tell you that I understand where you are coming from man . Each and every one of us has certain goals or dreams that we hope to achieve at some point in life . If we are faced with a situation requiring us to make a compromise , some of us take the realistic route and compromise , while some of us stick to our ideals/principles and continue to pursue our goals . There is no right or wrong in this . Each of us have the right to make our own decisions , and we take full responsibility for our actions .
I see no wrong in people holding out for their goals . Some people set some high personal standards for themselves , and are unwilling to compromise , and I dont think we can call them unrealistic . They just feel that they can do better than what they are given . They way I see it , you feel that you have already compromised once in your life by joining SRMEC and have lived to regret that decision and do not want to repeat that mistake . Fair enough . Whether IIMI , or any other B-School represents a compromise or an achievement is something very personal . If you see it as compromise , then you have every right to reject the offer and try again . All the best for CAT next year man . Hope you are not in a situation where you have to compromise on your principles .

I dont want to change your mind. But lemme add my perspective too.
To start with, When i wrote engineering entrance test my eyes were just on top 2-3 engg. colleges in ap viz. RECW, JNTUH et al. I got state first rank but due to some strange reservation crieteria for Diploma holders i could not goto RECW or JNTUH. Did i regret my decision??? YES. But I went to the next best college AUCE. And I tried to make my mark on that class and emerge with a campus placement. After joining in that college i regretted my decision for just 2-3 months., After that all my thoughts were on making better decisions/life next time only. It is no cribbing. I wanted to make it big and independant in life and chosen CAT. Again bumped there badly and had to join a little known company compared to peers in infys and satyams. Did i regret my job? YES. But for 2 weeks. I started loving my job and worked my way thru CAT/RAT/BAT. Now i got thru IIM-Indore. I know what i am gonna to. just kick A$$ @ Indore.
Wait has never been an option for me. Instead take whatever comes your way and still achieve what you want out of it. We live only once. We cant regret wasting years on entrance tests when we retire. Life is more important than Education.

Any way, that is just my point of view on this issue. Dont really want to change any ones views on the wholething.

No no..you have got me all wrong...this is not the case of "always never satisfied" thing....I am ambitious yes but not foolish please! I tell you it's not even abt MBA in the larger context of life. And as for Stanford, Harvard why not? If I feel the need for it I will definitley give it a shot...

But the key to being happy/satisfied in life is to giving everything an honest attempt and then being at peace with yourself irrespective of the outcome (my view).

Frankly I don't subscribe to such a view...yes due to vicissitudes of life somethings don't go your way...but when you have an option....I see no point in compromising (my view)

hey girish, firstly congrats on getting into IIM-I. secondly, it seems to me that u r thinly bordering the line between "improvement" and "neurotic" ( in an allymcbeal kinda way,so no offense).
Personally, ive always seen MBA's as a means to an end so ive been comparitively laidback abt them (a fact aptly mirrored by my having zero iim calls) and frankly i admire ur tenacity.
But the key to being happy/satisfied in life is to giving everything an honest attempt and then being at peace with yourself irrespective of the outcome (my view).
so if the doubt abt "i cd have been in iim A" is seriously impeding ur enjoying life at IIM A,then dnt even reconsider, just give CAT 04 a shot. ( and if u do BEST OF LUCK!!)

Nah...my parents gave carte blanche to me ..the decision was purely mine. so no guinea pigs either .:) I have always been a err.."bit independent" type from young with respect to decisions affecting only me...well ofcourse I cannot prognosticate and say how things will be 2 yrs down the line..but what I can safely is there won't be much change in my mindset regarding the B-school I want to go to...and the underlying premise is "No Compromise". Well the reason I have desisted from posting more in this thread is not that I have nothing to say but the fact that what I am going to say will not make sense and will not be germane to the issue at hand. I think I have made my point in my previous posts. such a decision has to be purely subjective and I can hardly expect my reasons to be convincing to others. U are very correct in yr stand... u are just 21, u can definitely try for the best next yr, u have nothing to lose, However, if u take this risk, u need to be prepared if (God forbid) u dont make it to any IIM next yr... for watever reason, u shud be able to handle it....

Actually, thinking more abt it, it depends on the passion you have towards institutes (absolutely nothing wrong it it), and more on the age-factor. If one is really young, in the sense, just out of the college, final year in the college etc, one always have the option of taking it the second time, coz, one cud even go for the thrid time if nothing works.

But its tough for go for more tries for a guy/gal with 2/3 yrs experience.. Passion is a different matter though.

I guess the diff between ABC and LKI is not so stark as u feel. Placements here are different, but 90% of the companies are same. If u have it in u, u can always get into the other 10% after some experience in the field !

I myself faced this dilemna, but i agree with the junta tht wat u r, makes yr future too. 10 yrs (probably even 2 yrs )down the line, nobody will care abt which institute u came from, wat'll matter will be yr performance in the corporate world !

There are scores of them who get around 90-97 in the first attempt, no IIM, no XL, no FMS, slog their $%%& , get into ABCs next year.

now i m person with final fms this year and in a dilema whether i shud go for cat next year. my apprehensions abt fms is abt infra and hostel life
[ as i know theirz nt a residential program and so the experience is going to be "Just in College" type learning..may b they have at par or same placements but i m thinking abt brand value (relatively declining) ]

as other option i have a tcs job guyz wht shud i do

Have you folks read abt the IITians, and what makes them good? The reasoning is "If you put 2000 of some of India's brighest kids and make them study together for 2 years, the product is going to be good, anyday."
Now, why do I state that? Im stressing on the "india's brighest kids" factor.

Now, coming to ABC vs LIK, and forgetting the fact that I can't think of ABC this year, how many students end up in ABC the first attempt? Definitely not 100%. :)

There are scores of them who get around 90-97 in the first attempt, no IIM, no XL, no FMS, slog their $%%& , get into ABCs next year. There are scores of them who scrapre thro LIK in the first attempt. They try and get into ABC the next year. So, are these students intellectually 'enlightened' in a year, do they become extra-geniuses in a matter of 360 odd days? How different in Mr X in LIK in the first attempt from Mr X in ABC in the second attempt? Mr X is Mr X, and there is no room for argument. Do these people make ABC's better off than LIK's? Maybe, may be not. But I dont think they do. What I'm trying to say is, speaking abt the capability of students, there is no much difference b/w ABC and LIK. . This is exactly the reason why top-companies go to many colleges rather than a single college. Take say companyX that goes to all IIMs. If they need 60 folks, they pick approx 10 each from all IIMs. They don't go to A or B and pick 60 there, because students wise, there is no *much* difference. :-P

Now ABC's have been in the field for a long time, their alumni base is strong. Thats the reason why they have the coveted foriegn placements, xtra- brand name etc, but LIKs aren't that worse off.. Repeating my argument abt L. When it started in 1986, XL was 'flagship'ping. Now L is equal or better than XL - the general perception. What did it take to make L stand high? The brand name for one, and everything else follows. Now look at I and K. Its hardly five years in the field, and they are in the top-10, if not the top 7/8.

Taken that I would choose ABC instead of LIK anyday, but that doesn't mean that LIK is bad. Ofcourse, its the individual perceptions that matter, but in the end, if students make up the college, there is no reason why non-ABC's be deemed strict 'untouchables', that too after reaching this far. If we are speaking abt placements, international Xchange programs *alone*, I'd say it makes sense to go to ABC. Not because LIK is bad, or that peer capability is less, or that their 'name' aren't famous.

Its the confidence in us that matters *most*. We don't have to prove to the world that we are good because we got into ABC. Because in the end, we are what we are. . Just MHO.

In someways i understand what you mean when you say you were a misfit in your college...but then you are talking about SRMEC and IITS...the difference is bound to be there and it must have been HUGE...

But comeon,here we are talking about IIM-I/K and IIMABC...

On one hand you say One should Know "why an MBA ?"Definetly it would include some Long Term and Short Term Plans only....If someones reason to "DO" an MBA is to study in IIMABC..then perhaps he is not ready enuf :)...Any reason in which IIM I/K cant stiasfy someones career plans...agreed GS does not go there and other similar stuff but its pretty trivial!

if going to an IIMABC is someones personal statement in life....nothing wrong..but its kiddish...i guess when we go to an IIM we become ready for BIG things in life...if someone cant let such small issues like "why im not at IIMABC"then he is just not prepared for an MBA .....about being a perfect fit....who knows his fit ?... One lucky day and i could make it into an IIMABC but that does not mean other guys are any less smarter than me....by god i wont risk another interview to find that out :)

When we are selected at an IIM its assured that we will be studying with an amzing group of people...just the competition assures that....

anyway,i guess the debate has gone on long enough for people who want to decide...lets hope you do it with complete conviction :)

We dont have any of our junta in IIML - so info is hard to come by. That will change next year as we have many of our people going to IIML this year. International placements are dependent on various factors including work ex , CGPA and other issues. The max international as far as I know happens in IIMA and IIMC and I am not sure about IIMB in regards to that :)

I have really seen at many times people axing their own foot. Usually the are the ones who tend to make statements like the ones above. If 10 years down the line you are going to rue that you graduated out of IIM I/K - I seriously wonder if you ever 'let go' of issues in life.

Even today you rue that you didn't make it to an IIT or didn't choose to take a second shot - nice for the ego - but for all practical reasons - its downright ego maniacal.

Don't take up IIMI/K - fair enough - but make sure the reason has more to do with what they can't give you or for the reasons that they don't align with your career aspirations.

Maintain a high personal and moral codes - fair enough. Thats the mark of a gentleman. But to rue over your past - almost inconsequential issues like the college you graduate from and that too over a period of years .. its almost deranged. Almost deranged.

Mmm..Mohit it's not the question of only ego...my point is if one is confident abt oneself what's wrong in giving it another shot? this is not a "do or die" situation....I don't see the how the decision is impractical too...why lower the personal standards one sets for himself/herself?

since we have shared the learnings of JEE and even that of an IIT Grad lets have one more analogy that i think is quiet appropriate....

First,lets get the assumptions right..IITS and IIMS are different in what they teach But enjoy EQUAL Reputation....

IIT B,D,KGP,KNP,Chennai ======= IIM ABC ( they are as good as they come)

IIT Roorkee =========== IIML (Roorkee guys..i know you are the among the best too )

IIT Guwahati =============== IIM I/K (New insti,far off place )

Now since its an IIM where we compete for 1000 seats and not 2500 odd as in jee lets assume IITS Top Branches as as equivalent to IIM Admission......

Now if i have a rank to get into IIT Roorkee Computer Science (lets assume it has the best placement among IITR branches and is really my area of interest )...and im not getting IIT B,C,D,KGP,KNP Comp Science......will i even think of giving JEE Again...NO..I will Happily take IIT Roorkee...because its "VERY GOOD GUYS"

Same for Guwahati.....I know many friends from Guwahati CSE who are doing as well as their Kharagpur or Delhi counterparts....whether it be scholarships form US univs OR working at Microsoft,SUN or Intel.....See the best at all the IITS are in the same league...all can Land an MIT/CMU Admit any given day...its only the guys who are in the lower half in the class who have problems in guwahati.....

if we assume that we would most likely end up in that half then Guwahati might be a bad choice but their is not much hope for guys like that anyway!

The factors that really matter are

Institute : IIMI/K are Very Good
Placements: Maybe they have fewer companies coming but avg salary looks really
attarctive
IIM Tag : No one can take that away ! (IITG Grads are as much demand in MS
as IITK grad.They will grill you anyway)

An IIM Tag can only provide you with an oppurtuniy...you have to fight then to proove yourself..An IIMABC Guy doesnot become a born CEO..you have to work for that...same thing applies to IIMI/K Grads

And about the kind of person you are .....well,even i am an engg from NIT Jalandhar and an IIT Freak..didnt get through jee...joined REC Comp Sci...felt sick everytime i crossed IIT Delhi campus,my sis lives close by.....even sobbed twice!...but guys in the end life goes on...the pain goes off...you feel confident again...its upon you to either make or break yourself...no IIT/IIM can do that to you...passed out in 2003...working at Oracle now and im doing some good work...i feel as technically sound as any guy around...and even my REC Tag is working fine......So,even without the IIT Tag people survive...but its good to be IITIAN anyday :)

In IIMI/K you have the tag...thats THE most important thing...its foolish to evn think of IIMABC and thats it...the rest are as good as any...and after that its YOU....
Their is nothing like Im made for IIMABC...you take your chances and you do as good as possible....wjat happends is out of your control anyway...

Maybe if you have options like a Microsoft Job (Pays as high as that of an MBA) or an onsite chance then a second chance might have made a bit of sense because that would only add up on your profile....but without some very good reason just for the sake of your ego...its a bad choice....

Looking another way its a chance to adapt yourself and make the best of the oppurtunity....in business you dont always get the best thing to run...you take something which is good but not the best and make best use of it....this is an ideal situation...dont run away from it....

And guys,since its a long post dont take offence on any part if it has come out badly...i dont intend any!

Let me give u a different view to this topic all together...
Me got ranked in JEE '98 but a very bad one, decided to join the best local engg coll and take on JEE the next yr. Well cracked JEE '99 and went to IIT M B.Tech Chemical engg.
Now, some gyan... at the end of the day i am sitting after 4 yr.s with abviously an IIT degree and a 1 yr. less workex than my mates in the local coll who are in the top software comp.s in India....
Me tell you thats the same thing that happens ewhere. As long as you get in to a good college and for that matter IIM indore is definitely one among the best... with gr8 infra and stuff.... As long as the best students in India are going there there is nothing much to worry abt.
that's why i'm not gonna even think twice of writing CAT again...
Lemme tell ya friends... it is an Unpredictable exam... u r marking your life in those 2 hr.s ... and a 3-4 mark diff might make it or break it... so as long as you have one go for it...

okies _nil_ here is my take on this...I don't know personally Ashilles a.k.a Ashwin ofcourse..never chatted with him as well..so have absolutely no idea what kind of guy he is..but be that as it may *if* I had been in his position I wouldn't have taken IIMI..infact wouldn't have taken IIMK and IIML either...no offense meant to these institutes...there are no doubt one of the best....but the point is what kind of a person one is. I don't want to live 10 yrs down the line and think "what if?" ,"If only.." . And this is backed up by my confidence in my ability. Just as am sure Ashwin is abt his. You say it's a wrong attitude to lead a life? and one should make the best of what comes ones way? Touche! 4 yrs back I missed my IIT seat narrowly after slogging..I repeat..slogging for 2 yrs...and well joined SRMEC. thought it wasn't worth having a shot at IITJEE again next yr. And I have regretted that decision till date. I was a total misfit in the college as far as academics went. Yes it's all in the mindset no doubt. But then I am in control of my mind and I live by my moral code. It's humilating to oneself when one sets some personal standards and fail to match them. After all I am answerable to myself for the
decisions I take and to no one. And more importantly I am still 21 yrs young.

What's wrong with that _nil_ ? Isn't the whole meaning of the word "happy" subjective? *if* I am sure I will regret my decision 10 yrs down the line..why take it? Like I said this cannot be applied to every situation in life..but here one has an option. I am pragmatic enough to realize there are certain situations in life where one has to take the bull by the horns and move on with life. But this is not such a situation. so is not choosing one's partner.

So it all boils down to the mindset of Ashwin and how confident he is abt his ability to crack CAT again and get the 6 calls. As we have all seen providence plays a vital role in life. Whether one has the gumption to take it head on remains to be seen Like I said it's not abt mere money and good career...it's something more.....

A whole lot of people that I have met and known are never able to make out why they want to do an MBA. I am not talking about exceptions tho. From the many things they say about their motivation of doing an MBA, seems quite superfluous. Plz guys these are my views and what I have seen. Dont turn on against me
