Then as per rules of similar triangles, Ratio of areas = Ratio squares of corresponding side

For question number 7 they say answer is 1, but just by analyzing the question we can see that both x and f(x) cannot be -ve at the same time. :banghead::banghead:
The given equation is : f(x)=x+(2/x)-3
=> x=1,-1,2,-2:banghead::banghead::banghead:
I think option 4 is the correct answer. Help please

after 4 aimcat i have finally mustered up the courage to give my marks here... i have following each of the threads closely since 1320..

i know my score is too low as compared to people here. i hardly get to see someone who scores like me. i started with a mere 35.23 %tile in my 1st ever mock and improved with every mock and this is what i am getting after 4 mocks :(

yaha toh sare 90 %tilers baithe hai... bhailog plz give me any suggestions how to improve my score further? i dn't have any strong points as such but QA is definitely weak area.

still have miles to go... hopeful see a better score next time

I solved it as follwoing:
let 100 be starting bacteria.

then after 2nd hour no. is number is reduced to 50.
Its given after second hour bacteria == sum till infinity (==half at starting, deduced)
So applying GP concept series goes like this:
100, 100x,100x^2...
Simply we get the common ration as (1/2)^1/2
series is 100,100/(2)^1/2,50, 50/(2)^1/2.
Third term is 50/(2)^1/2 == 35.something. option D =35.36 :grin::biggrin:

dey r checking whether the sum of coefficients of x in 1st two equations is equal to the corresponding coefficient of x in the 3rd equation. Similarly in case of y and z. if dis satisfies then the coefficients on the RHS of the equations shud also satisfy,

In AIMCAT 1317, take question 13. The solution given by TIME is,



It is a simple % change problem. But the calculation seems to be hell.. Took me more than 7 minutes and the fact was that i got it wrong

Any methods for solving these sort of tough calculations ?? Will Vedic maths come in handy?

no..dun go for vedic maths:nono:.. there will be some problems with extra calculations and some with minimal calculations.. so.. some problems will dfntly take time.. all you can do is practise and try to do calculations mentally while prctsng..that might increase ur speed.. otherwise there is no other options for such questions.. they wil take time..

That is what happens when u mug up a formula . The formula is applicable for real numbers , but here , they are integers.

So Integers are subset of real numbers , correct me if i am wrong

But when you click on the links that are given below the question for "Solution", that contains the solution of the Correct Question. Now, if you remember the question, it can help for the time being.

See, you can do it easily by kinda approximation.

Let initial amount be 100.
Now, we know :
Bacteria dead after 1st two hours = Remaining Bacterias.
=> 50 should be dead by the 2nd hour.

Now, assume 30% decay rate
=> 100 - 70 - 49

Remaining are 49 and hence, the decay rate would be somewhat less than 30%.
Take it as 30% and solve for third hour =>
100 - 70 - 49 - 34.3

Thus, we have our answer just a bit greater than 34.3 which is 35.36 from the options.

There was a question if sum of three integers is 10, then the sum of fourth power of the integers cannot be less than

1)1000
2)370
3)418
4)600

I followed this step
a+b+c=10
and we know

(a^n+b^n+c^n)/3 >(a+b+c/3)^n

so now n=4
(a^4+b^4+c^4/3) > (10/3)^4

(a^4+b^4+c^4) > 3 * (10000/81)

(a^4+b^4+c^4) > (10000/27)=370.370

so this cannot be less than 370 so why is the answer 418

Yes it cannot be less than 370 but this is not the max limit.
The catch is they all are integers and the inequality holds true for all numbers
Now the derivation part,
to be LHS=RHS => a=b=c (for min) which is not possible. so a=3 b=3 c=4

i can give u one logical approach where u need to play wid numbs...
the ques says the numb of bacteria perishing in the frst two hours is equal to the bacteria perishing after dat...so 50% after two hrs...
lets say initially the number of bacteria is 100...it reduces to 50 after two hrs...lets assume that k is used in fractions instead of percentage...
so after frst hr
100k
after second hr
100k^2
so 100k^2=50
k^2=1/2
k=(1/2)^0.5
so after three hrs 100k^3=50k=50*.707=sumwhere arnd 35%...
i hope u got it...

although i myself want to know more about this formula u stated

this is simple law of averages..u cn use it anywhere..here also the way you used it.. was correct but u r supposed to take care of the constraints given in the question.
